Largest Collection On The Globe of Todd Rundgren Audio Rarities

Greetings Audio Toddheads! Warren H. (Atlanta, GA. USA) here. Tony Rogers and I have transferred our entire audio collections over to my home in 2008. We (Tony & I) thought my circumstances (A 62 year old, single, IT specialist/Audio Editor guy in Atlanta with lots of Todd Rundgren history/archival collecting since 1972) would be ideal for taking over the 'Library' in all its glory. And, so an 'incorporation' of his and my colossal collections takes place! I now curate this ‘museum’. And I plan to share much of this, just as Tony did all these decades. And yes, I’m somewhat of a Todd Rundgren Historian. I have been 'following' Todd extensively (in all forms of media) ever since I saw (and met) him here at an Historic Show at Atlanta’s Fabulous Fox Theatre on November 8 1973. So I know 'enough'. Please note that I say share my enthusiasm. No buying or selling. Nor will a penny exchange hands. Never.
I want to say a big THANK YOU in advance to all of you who are going to help and have helped with this so far. I’ll do my best. Write me anytime. twarrenh@gmail.com
Just scroll down to the items listed below by period and click on any year to browse the collection.
We've also recently been working in collaboration with my friend Frank Bubnick and his well known vast quality collection (you can visit his list by clicking on his name). Some of his editing is unequaled anywhere.
And some late breaking neat news : I believe most of you are familiar with the JEMS group. A bunch of super collectors for many bands’ audience recordings (predominate though are Yes and Springsteen). Well known for their re-mastering prowess and quality. They’ve been in contact with me for a couple of years, and in December of last year offered me all their (originals) Todd Rundgren Collection. They just didn’t have the resources or the time for refining anything by Todd Rundgren. It just wasn’t on their timeline. I received all their cassettes (60) within a few weeks! Most of them are MASTER tapes from the original Taper. They will be sending me all their DATs and Reels at a later date. I will be listing all these recordings here, as I digitally transfer them. With this addition of the JEMS collection I believe these Todd Rundgren Archives are easily the largest collection on the planet.
How do we share you ask? Well, Just for what it's worth, we really don't do the 'snail mail trading' (by postal) much these days. So, if you would like me to share or trade any of this 'Catalog' with you, it would be more convenient/easiest to share in the form of on-line file transfer. Generally, in .flac format, compressed to .zip or .rar for smoother/faster quality exchange [depending upon the size of the audio file(s) we might be exchanging of course]. Hope that all makes sense. I can work with you on 'all that'. Again, write me, and then we'll come to an agreement of sorts. Please keep in mind, that anything that is 'Official', or 'Professionally Marketed', or still available for 'Retail' purchase is not of consideration. Nor is there any monetary means of transaction.
I do not have any rights to, and I am not open for sharing any material that may be listed below that has been commercially or officially released and is still available retail. (It may be listed below for collection listing purpose only). I do not take or give any money for a single item below either. I do not take away any proceeds that are due to Todd Rundgren, family, friends, business or supporting/associated musicians. If it is ROIO (recording of independent origin), then I'm open to share. Support the artist! Go buy his stuff where and whenever available! Speaking of which; an ultimate place to find/buy Todd's releases and imports & rarities is TRBAZAAR. Check it out! If Scott ain't got it, nobody does...just about! And of course many past official CD/DVD releases and proprietary Todd merchandise is readily available for ordering on-line at The Toddstore. So check them out for sure.
I like to give credit where credit is due too. So please forgive me if I do not credit the right persons involved in making these recordings available/possible for all these years.
I’ll start a ‘Credits’ list here below, and maintain it on down the road. Like to make sure all the folks involved are appreciated. For now, let me go ahead and thank some folks that have really been instrumental in these archives (no particular order): Tony Rogers (of course), Mike Armes, Jeff Gauss 'Weavil' (RIP), Frank Bubnick, Paul Russo, Hiroshi Kawauchi, Istvan Berzenczei, Sara Kritzer, Barry Beiseigel, Marc Linowitz, Rob 'Lockjaw' Levangie, Roger Steel, Mike Adrian, Gil Ireland-Ashley, Jim Farrell, Dale Michelsohn, Gary Urwin, Don B., Bob Stanislowski (RIP), Micheal B., Jon Risen, Jon Babcock, Mark Wilpolt, Tom Cannon, Lin Sprague, Joe Franks, Chris 'Razz', Geoff (& Rick) Laurenzo, Ted Moon, Richard Roys, Storm Hunter, Moz (Mike), Sohta Fujito, David Skye, Allen Law, Matt Walsh, Kevin Lewis, Doug Ford, Dave Knife, JEMS, Jared Houser, Gene Poole, 'Elegymart', Gail Artsgard, Victor Baissait, Connor Payne and players to be named later. Special thanks to Roger Linder for providing this page space for us for decades. Let's Rock!
BTW, I call this group of people 'My Cartel'. However, I have given the group a Media name: F451 Media (as in 451 Farenheit). It is not a brand name, for nothing of mine is for sale or has been sold EVER. It is a logo for these dedicated Todd Rundgren Collectors , which most of been doing this since the early 90s (and even earler). Our logo is:

Note:"CHICAGO (April 2, 2013) – The Columbia College Chicago Music Department welcomes musician, songwriter and producer Todd Rundgren as its last 'artist-in-residence' of the Spring 2013 semester from April 8-12. Rundgren will bring his knowledge and experience to workshops, master classes and classroom instruction, ending with a residency concert on April 12 at the Music Center."~ Columbia.edu newsletter. This was an absolutely wonderful concert. The student ensembles were magnificent and the synergy between the students and Todd was a beautiful thing to behold. Congratulations on a terrific event! This is actually the audio grabbed from the audience video done by University students.... so it's 'Pro-grade' soundboard quality. Love the setlist. These students rock! Included was an incredible, first time ever performed, live rendition, of 'Chain Letter' (Ballad of Todd Rundgren 1971) too. Another real surprise is Todd & The Ensemble's performance of their own recent studio recording (Todd calls it a difinite 'Hit Single')- 'Why Is It When The Rain Falls'....Wow!~ Warren

Track List:INTRO (PLAYING SYNCHRONICITY-POLICE).LATE SHOW THEME.MORE THEME w/SERIOUS.STOOGE OF THE NIGHT.HELLO IT'S ME.WE GOTTA GET YOU A WOMAN. I SAW THE LIGHT.CAN WE STILL BE FRIENDS.LATE SHOW END THEME.
Note:Some fortunate Todd Fan (in the studio audience) recorded this with a basic Sony cassette recorder during the opening portion of The Late Show w/David Letterman May 7 2013. And also captured all the Todd and Band performing during commercials (that we did not see/hear) as well as the closer portions of the show. We thank 'Hewey' for a re-tweak that has it sounding like we're in the front row. WOW~ Warren

Note:We'll just share this review by Jay Petrarca as opposed to our critique.chuckle chuck: "I waited a week to write this review so as to give myself some time to calm down. I've been a Todd fan since 1980 and have gone to well over 60 shows. I love going to Todd Rundgren concerts. To me it doesn't matter what kind of music he plays I want to see him perform. I went into this performance blind. I didn't read the reviews or the setlists (I don't think any were posted). I knew from a Todd interview to expect lights and lots of dancing. I thought and hoped that he would open with Imagination. I thoroughly enjoyed that number. But after that I must admit I was somewhat disappointed and it has nothing to do with the music. My biggest disappointment was that he play for only an hour and 1/2. I drove well over two hours with two of my brothers and we all paid close to 80 bucks to see a 90 minute show. Now, I know Todd doesn't set the price, but 90 minutes? That's weak, IMHO. There's no reason he couldn't have added another 30 minutes. Also, he didn't play the guitar except for the first song. During the NWO tour he jammed on Secret Society, why not this time? He was just pushing buttons. And lastly, I wasn't thrilled with the encore. Maybe if I got two hours worth of music it wouldn't have been so bad. But the Donna Summer ending... I wish I had the chance to watch the PPV first. I would've saved 60 bucks and 7 hours of my time. I will be going to future Todd shows, but only if I get my money's worth." Superd audience recording however. Thank you Jon!~ Warren
5/12/13 “OFFICIAL STATE VISIT” WEBCAST PARAMOUNT THEATRE HUNTINGTON NY NEVESSA WEBCAST 01:36:18

Track List:IMAGINATION. PRIME TIME. SMOKE. SERIOUS. FUTURE. SECRET SOCIETY. PING ME. ANGRY BIRD. NO WORLD ORDER. COLLIDE-A-SCOPE. TRUTH. NOTHING TO LOSE. PERSONALITY CRISIS. PARTY LIQUOR. WORLDWIDE EPIPHANY. SIR REALITY. CAN WE STILL BE FRIENDS. I SAW THE LIGHT. HELLO IT'S ME. (BONUS: 11:28 MINUTE INTERVIEW DAVID JURMAN 2013-05-06)
Note:THE Webcast . WOW. I grabbed the audio from the streaming live show… and If you like ‘State’, then you will love this…. and it is essential to you. The album performed live in its entirety, and flawlessly except for a false beginning to Truth. Jesse does the guitar work here…. and Prairie on the electronic drums and DJ Odd Todd on Vocals and Computer. The medleys done in a unique fashion between ‘With a Twist’, jazz and dance prog fusion. Nothing to Lose and Personality Crisis are particular surprises too. Certainly a show that is as meant to be seen as is to hear. Of course strictly a ‘dance’ presentation. And it will get you tapping your feet.
Listed for collection listing purposes only. This is an Official/Professional Webcast Recording. And can be purchased/viewed though Nevessa Productions (until September 2013). Go buy it it! You won't be dissapointed. ESSSENTIAL. And the procedes go to Todd.

Note:This is a superb audience recording. The performance... well you must like 'State' to enjoy it, or you may also be very undecided. Which I am. Istvan said, 'The club at the foot of the Ardennes is an intimate venue. The show started with the incredible lights and Imagination - way cool. From then on the set had me by the throat and gasping for air. Such sonic thundering and pacing was new to me.'
I've read many reviews of the 'State' performances. Most seem stuggling with what to say.~ Warren

Note:Very good quality audience recording. Here's a review of the show from superfan Ben Rose.... who was in attendance (as well as the pre and after show gatherings), "His latest tour is the 'Official State Visit' showcasing songs from his latest release 'State' as well as tracks from his more electronic albums such as 'NOW' 'Liars' and '(Re)Production'. The maestro is supported by the exquisite Jesse Gress on guitar and Prairie Prince on an electronic drum kit. This show is Todd as you will have never seen him before. It represents another chapter in the continuing exploration of musical genres that the man has engaged in since the late 60's and whilst some might question the wisdom of a man who qualifies for his bus pass producing an album of electronica/dance music at this stage of his career it is a testament to him that he pulls it off and the songs translate so well to the live setting. This is certainly not my favourite genre and I travelled with a significant degree of skepticism but I left having thoroughly enjoyed the show. We made our way to the venue at around 7.30 and were pleasantly surprised to be able to walk up to a spot just one row back from the stage. Todd and the lads took to the stage at about 8.15pm and wearing his 'State' goggles launched in to 'Imagination'. It was clear already that he was in great voice and the sound was pretty impressive even if it wasn't immediately apparent as to what Prairie was adding to the mix. The setlist continued with 'Truth' and was the same as from previous shows. My personal highlights were 'Future' which featured some superb work from Jesse, 'Secret Society', 'Ping Me', 'Prime Time', 'Worldwide Epiphany' and 'Sir Reality'. Hell I even enjoyed 'Party Liquor'!!!! I will never like 'Angry Bird' and if that were replaced by 'In My Mouth' that would make things better in my opinion. I also didn't care much for the encores. It seemed a little bit of a pisstake to be honest and those classics while they make have survived a bossa nova makeover are certainly not suited to the dance/electronica one. Todd's voice throughout was in great shape and his energy levels amazing. I asked him later if he'd been working out and he said that he does "Every night at 8pm". There's probably a little too much pre-recorded stuff in the show but that's nit picking by me and Prairie could probably be used more. I don't really see the point of having pre-recorded AND live drums together.Being so close to the stage I didn't get the full effect of the lighting show but I hope to see that a little better at the London show next weekend. The evening was topped off wonderfully when Todd, Prairie and Jesse arrived at the aftershow party arranged by Jill Mingo and sat atour tables. All were extremely generous with their time and I spoke at length with Jesse Gress. All in all a superior evenings entertainment in pretty fine company! Thanks everyone who helped make the evening! You know who you are!!"

Note:Here's an oldie that just now (finally) surfaced, by my good buddy Jon Babcock. An awesome recording of the last night of Toddstock II, or 6.5, or whatever ya wanna call it, at Nottaway plantation in Louisiana. It was a "STATE" performance. Those lucky ones of you who attended will want to keep this charm for their memories. I did some EQing and brought the performance 'up front and in your face'. Those that are particularly the fond of the "Official State Visit' Tour, would love this one. ~ Warren

7/17/13 THE GOVERNOR @ HINDMARSH HOTEL ADELAIDE AUSTRALIA AUDIENCE (GOD’S GOOFBALL) 115:00

Track List:REAL MAN. (MISTART) BUFFALO GRASS. KINDHEARTED WOMAN BLUES.DETERMINATION. LUCKY GUY. CAN'T WE STILL BE FRIENDS. EXPRESSO ( ALL JACKED UP ).LOVE IS THE ANSWER . IT WOULDN’T HAVE MADE ANY DIFFERENCE (WITH A TWIST VERSION). LOST HORIZON. FLAW. SOUL BROTHER. I'M SO PROUD.OOH BABY BABY. I WANT YOU (WITH A TWIST VERSION). HAWKING.I SAW THE LIGHT. COURAGE. DRIVE. COULDN'T I JUST TELL YOU. HELLO IT’S ME. A DREAM GOES ON FOREVER.
Note:This very good quality audience recording (now almost a year old) just in from my friend Steve ‘Mac’ in Australia. (recorded by a fan known only as ‘God’s Goofball’). Steve says, ’I was really impressed by this show in terms of energy and commitment and Todd is a consummate performer, he's great to watch as he really puts his all into his singing. Unfortunately, his voice was suffering when he tried to sing falsetto, as he said "I guess I left my falsetto back in the rehearsal room." But, this is still a really good show if one can deal with the occasional croaky vocals. I've heard lots worse live Todd, and as always, any band with Kasim, Jesse and Prairie as members is worth a listen. Sound is really good.’ And very good sound it is. Very much of a ‘soundboard’ quality to it. But you can tell a lot of work went into eliminating crowd noise and applause. If you’re like me, you like some of the crowd ambience and phonically, somehow that has been removed to too much of a degree I think. As Steve says, if you can get by the slight croaky vocals here and there, I feel it is one of Todd’s best performances that I have heard of what we now call the ‘Hits Show’. And that makes this one very much ‘collectable’. Nice to add it to the archives. A nice read from Adelaide Chronicles after the show: ‘Todd Rundgren kicked off in fine voice with a two-hour set at The Gov that acted as an abridged Rundgren Songbook. The show generously sampled a career of more than 40 years, which in pretend DJ mode he half-mockingly labeled “all the hits, all the time”. But hits they were, and delivered in pure power-pop fashion by a master of the art. Rundgren has left his mark in all sorts of musical places: as a solo artist, band leader and member (including The New Cars in 2006 and as featured guitarist in Ringo Starr’s All-Starr Band); playing with live orchestral accompaniment; running university courses; and producing lots of work for other acts. In all of this he has also been a constant innovator in electronics, production techniques and live sound systems. On this night, though, the Wizard/True Star was in a relatively modest live show and working with the basics as part of a five-piece band. A little shakiness at the start of “Kindhearted Woman Blues” from Johnson, his album covering songs by the great Robert Johnson, was one of only a few signs of Rundgren’s voice having lost any strength. Range was occasionally an issue, as he self-deprecatingly commented later about aiming for a falsetto passage, and missing. What stood out, however, was how enduring his compositions are; richly textured So many tracks to mention: “Lucky Guy” (from Hermit of Mink Hollow) was a riveting irony-free zone of gratitude, which also happened to show a Rundgren trait, the effective use of hand gestures. “I like to get this out of the way,” he said, before launching into the much-loved “Can We Still Be Friends". The upbeat wired “Espresso (All Jacked Up)” was every danceable, Rundgren claiming it threatened cardiac arrest. This time, the ever-compelling “Hawking” sounded rather like “The Verb ‘To Love’”, just as moving but darker. Yes, there was also “It Wouldn’t Have Made Any Difference”, “Soul Brother” with a James Brown flourish, the samba-accented “I Want You”, “I Saw the Light”, and much more. Rundgren can conjure anthemic tunes but they are not merely empty posturing or gimmick. Each tends to address some real matter of feeling, helped on this occasion by Jesse Gress (an alter-Todd) on guitar and Prairie Prince (ex-Tubes) on drums. It was also a pleasure to see bassist Kasim Sulton, whose work with Rundgren dates back to 1976; somehow he looked as if he hasn’t aged. The performance closed with the lovely “A Dream Goes On Forever”, a fitting conclusion.’

Note:Another 2013 show which has been coined by Todd fans by now as the ‘Hits Shows’ finds Todd here in excellent form and usual humor….full of energy and this is an excellent audience capture. Thanks to technology today, the mini equipment fans use to record these shows is exceptional and highly advanced. Sounds like we’re in the front row . The Birchmere has become a tradition for us now for the last ten years... and our favorite line-up again does not let you down: Todd - vocals, guitar, keys, Prairie – drums, Kasim - bass, vocals, Jesse - guitar, vocals and Ferenzik - keyboards, vocals. EXCELLENT recording sound quality. This one is a particular collector's treasure trophy for me, not just for the excellent sound....but I've seen some video and photos from the show... and Todd and Band seem as youthful as ever... and not much where Todd just is seated. He's on his feet and rocking with 'Foamy' pretty much the entire show. Thank you 'BB'! ESSENTIAL~ Warren

Jon admits, “all a little too far away, but unobstructed.” We’ll work on that at a later date, but the recording is a splendid listen! The ‘rgrove’ (less complete) audience recording, also listed here, is a stronger recording, however. These Orchestrations with Todd are all ESSENTIAL. Note:Excellent audience recording from our buddy Jon Babcock. Once again, a wonderful occasion provided to us by Doug Ford & Cruiser Mel (RundgrenRadio.com). I greatly wanted to attend this show, but my schedule wouldn’t allow it, so I’m very thankful to Jon for grabbing this (and in two different bitrates) in all its glory. I understand that the Fan meet and greets were everything that I knew they would be. A super set now called by Todd’s Fandom as the ‘Hits Show’. Everything’s here including Todd’s usual humor between tunes. His voice is strong and clean and the band is perfect. And another incredible performance of "Hawking" which gets better (if that’s possible) every time I hear it. No song is weak here folks. I saw some great video of this event too. My friends tell me that there was an amazing vibe in the air and everyone had a great time including the band and Pat Travers Band was exceptional as well. Can’t thank Doug enough for always putting these together. This is ESSENTIAL audio historical record. Happy New Year everybody!~ Warren

Note:Todd's Set is Soundboard (Annnnddddd....I know I'm asking a global Forum this; BUT,is it too much to ask for ya'll to keep this one close to the vest? I don't want any flack on how I 'obtained' this one)
RundgrenRadio.com's NYE gig in Orlando Florida. Yep, It's the Soundboard. And as soundboards go; they are always excellent recordings of the Band...but you can barely hear an audience. It's kind of mysterious sounding. But that's OK. This of course, is what we 'coined' as a 'Hits Show'. Which Todd was touring at this portion of the year 2013. It's New Years Eve, and Todd is really feeling the Champagne here, but his performances are spot on.
As you know, Pat Travers is on the bill too (His Set is on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N96HlBVSx3c ), and here he 'guests' on Mystified & Broke Down & Busted. All in all, this is a knock out recording. I love the selection of Tunes
Rundgren - Guitar, Vocals
Jesse Gress - Guitar, Background Vocals
Kasim Sulton - Bass, Background Vocals
John Ferenzik - Keyboards
Gregg Bendian - Drums
And I don't think Al would mind if I shared his TRC Review (Al Cannon): " I decided to drive down to Orlando from NC for this show. It wasn't as easy as my usual method (flying), but I had time for stops in SC and GA, so I figured why not. We got to Florida and met up with my good friend Keith Kaufman. We headed for the party on 12/30 and had a blast meeting Kasim Sulton and friends, plus making new friends. On 12/31 came part two. We got to BB Kings and found a great place to stand on the floor. The show began and Pat Travers exploded into some great tunes including "Boom Boom Out Go The Lights" and "Statesboro Blues". I had not seen Pat since 1987 so it was great to see him again. Now we get to Todd. After a short intermission, the show started as did the hits. The show turned out to be a "Best of" event similar to what we had seen on the "Unpredictable Tour" (with a few adjustments). I won't get into analyzing the set list here, but I can say that Todd's voice was strong and clean and the band was perfect. I heard someone say that "Hawking" was the best version he'd ever heard and I can agree (with the possible exception of the night I heard it on the "A Capella Tour" in 1985). Every song was strong. There was an amazing vibe in the air and everyone had a great time including the band. Todd really seemed to enjoying himself. Thanks again to Doug Ford (the promoter) for a wonderful evening. Putting shows together is not easy and (as always) he along with Cruiser Mel did a great job. So we'll see you in September, "Cause There's Always More."~ Warren
*Addition 2018-10-06 Pat Travers Set:Magnificent recording by my Buddy Jon Babcock. I did some equalizing, brought out Travers' Vocals and upped the Bass. This sounds like a Soundboard, so it's a nice accent to the above actual Soundboard of Todd's portion from the RundgrenRadio New Years Eve Extravaganza down in Orlando FL.~ Warren
Pat Travers: Guitar & Vocals
Kirk McKim: Guitar
Rodney O'Quinn: Bass
Sandy Gennaro: Drums
