Todd Rundgren/UTOPIA (and Related) Audio on CD-R ______ v06.2013

Greetings Audio Toddheads! Warren Hewetson (Atlanta, GA. USA) here. As most of you probably have already gathered; Tony Rogers and I have transferred all his audio collection over to my home in April of 2011. I don't speak for Tony, but in/around 2008, he had some exceptional changes in his family, business/practice, musicianship & life's interests. It somewhat prohibited his 'curatorship' of this vast historical collection of obscurities, rarities & Toddities. Me having been a long time friend, and somewhat of a 'side kick' collector/enthusiast; We (Tony & I) thought my 'sitrep' (58, single, IT guy in Atlanta with lots of TR history/archival collecting since 1973) would be ideal for taking over the 'Library' in all its glory. I plan to share openly, just as Tony did all these decades. Am I an authority? Hell no. But been following Todd in all forms of media ever since I saw/met him here at the Atlanta Fox Nov. 8 1973. So I know a little bit. I want to say a big THANK YOU in advance to all of you who are going to help and have helped with this so far. I’ll do my best. Write me anytime. twarrenh@bellsouth.net
Having said all that, I'll be making changes to some of Tony's descriptions here as a form of update. I like to give credit where credit is due too. So please forgive me if I do not credit the right persons involved in making these recordings available/possible. Feel free to correct me on who's responsible for what, but do not ask me to change artist information, line-ups, set-lists, venues and or dates. In addition, most of the Tubes related media will not be included in the collection. And from around 2008 and beyond; the library here is not covered too extensively. My partner in crime~ Jeff Gauss (Weavil) has offered to help me out with much of that. Visit: Weavil's Toddlist. With Jeff's help, this is arguably one of the (if not THE) largest most extensive archival collections of Todd's rare audio on the planet.
I do not have any rights to, and I am not open for sharing any material that may be listed below that has been commercially or officially released and is still available retail. (It may be listed below for collection listing purpose only). I do not take or give any money for a single item below either. I do not take away any proceeds that are due to Todd Rundgren, family, friends, business or supporting/associated musicians. If it is ROIO (recording of independent origin),then I'm open to share. Support the artist! Go buy his stuff where and whenever available! Speaking of which; the ultimate place to find/buy Todd's releases and imports & rarities is TRBAZAAR. Check it out ! If Scott ain't got it it, nobody does...just about!
I give Tony a ton of applause for his relentless cause of collecting this stuff from around the globe. You can write him at the TRconnection Forum and thank him too. We've also recently been working in collaboration with my friend Frank Bubnick and his well known vast quality collection (you can visit his list by clicking on his name). WOW! Maybe I can do a "Credits" list here below, on down the road. Like to make sure all the folks involved are appreciated. For now, let me go ahead and thank some folks that have really been intrumental in these archives (no particular order): Tony Rogers (of course), Jeff Gauss (Weavil), Frank Bubnick, Paul Russo, Hiroshi Kawauchi, Istvan, Roger Steel, Mike Adrian, Gil Ireland-Ashley, Gary Urwin, Don B., Bob Stanislowski (RIP), Micheal B., Jon Risen, Jon Babcock, Mark Wilpolt, Tom Cannon, Joe Franks, Richard Roys, Storm Hunter, Sara K., Moz, and players to be named later. Special thanks to Roger Linder for providing this page space for decades. Let's Rock!

CAN WE STILL BE FRIENDS. MATED. CD TWO: THE WAITING GAME. LOVE IN ACTION. LOST HORIZON/MARVIN GAYE MEDLEY. FEEL IT. ROCK LOVE. HAWKING. WANT OF A NAIL. HELLO ITS ME. CD THREE: I LOVE MY LIFE.
Note:The mother of all Nearly Human shows - the last and longest and with the final monologues that grew as the tour grew on. Sound is super. Triumphant-our hero has kicked ass across the US and Japan, and finally gets a couple months rest before the 'write on the run' sessions, known as Second Wind, would start up in June when WB was hungry for a follow-up. ESSENTIAL~ Tony
6/90 UNKNOWN VENUE/SAN FRANCISCO AREA 2ND WIND PRE TOUR REHEARSALS COURTESY OF GIL IRELAND-ASHLEY SOUNDBOARD 53:08/28:02
Date Added:3/3/2006
Track List:CD ONE: PRE BANTER. LOVE IN DISGUISE. SMELL OF MONEY. 2ND WIND. GAYAS EYES. GAYA II. CHANGE MYSELF. CD TWO: WHOS SORRY NOW, LOVE SCIENCE (2 TAKES). IF I HAVE TO BE ALONE. PUBLIC SERVANT.
Note:Wonderful run thru of 2nd Wind stuff on the eve of the tour leading to the pfa. At this point, the tunes are more loose, and it’s regretful that some of these ended up so stilted on the end product....fascinating tradeoffs between Roger Powell and Vinnie on Love In Disguise…one of my faves... a discussion about a guy who ate whole hotdogs on Letterman...Todd and Michelle talk about Michelle falling for the fat guy…These are tough tunes to play...this by the way is almost one CD and the purported 7.12 thing is this again with some snippets of another shows rehearsal..If I Have To Be Alone is one of Todd’s great unknown songs.....this shows you how they put it together...super find in top sound...some distortion on vocals but for the most part its nice...~ Tony
6/29/90 VENTURA CA. SOUNDBOARD SOURCE 70:45/22:23
Track List:CD ONE: LOVE SCIENCE. CHANGE MYSELF. CAN'T STOP RUNNING. THE SMELL OF MONEY. IF I HAVE TO BE ALONE. LOVE IN DISGUISE. REAL MAN. UNLOVED CHILDREN. JESSE. PLAY THIS GAME (CUTS). LOVE IN ACTION (WILLIE WILCOX GUESTS). GAYA'S EYES. CD TWO: 2ND WIND. WANT OF A NAIL. PUBLIC SERVANT.
Note:Astounding pre-San Francisco 2nd Wind recording session stop. You dont hear these live, and Willie stops by. Recently discovered board tape. ESSENTIAL.~ Tony
7/1/90 SACRAMENTO CREST THEATER (2ND WIND WARM UP SHOW) GIL IRELAND-ASHLEY (MONITOR MIX) TRANS BY PAUL RUSSO 59:17/45:13
Date Added:3/3/2006
Track List:CD ONE: LOVE SCIENCE. CHANGE MYSELF. CANT STOP RUNNING. THE SMELL OF MONEY. IF I HAVE TO BE ALONE. LOVE IN DISGUISE. REAL MAN. UNLOVED CHILDREN. THE WHEEL. CLICHE. CD TWO: WHOS SORRY NOW(FADES IN). KINDNESS. LOVE IN ACTION. GAYAS EYES. WANT OF A NAIL. PUBLIC SERVANT.
Note:Another wonderous pre -2nd Wind show. Balance is pretty nice, and lots of guests this night: Urbano, Randy, Rex, Liv, Michelle-…a real family affair...talk about the baseball games at that stage....hear Todd working out the end adlibs on Change Myself...If I Have To Be Alone is as amazing as 6/29...remarkable...we get The Wheel instead of Jesse, because Todd’s kids are there...Todd is on guitar fire on Unloved Children…much mistakes in Kindness...Love In Action is not on the tour, so enjoy...Todd does; "…Where do we go...Where do we go now...(GNR)"...adlibs on Gaya’s Eyes ( very different than the CD version)...Prairie kicks 2nd Wind through the roof…great snare rolls...all guests sing on Want of a Nail...great stuff!~ Tony
7/12/90 SAN FRANCISCO PALACE OF FINE ARTS SOUNDBOARD (EDIT: FRANK BUBNICK/PAUL RUSSO) 69:19/69:22
Date Added:12/7/2001
Track List:CD ONE: LOVE SCIENCE. WHOS SORRY NOW (TAKE 1-3). JESSE. KINDNESS. CHANGE MYSELF (TAKE 1-2). CD TWO: THE SMELL OF MONEY. IF I HAVE TO BE ALONE (TAKE 1-3). LOVE IN DISGUISE. GAYAS EYES. WHO'S SORRY NOW (TAKE 4). VOTING RAP. 2ND WIND (TAKES 1-2). PUBLIC SERVANT.
Note:This is the board tape from the last nite of recording of the 2nd Wind album. As you remember, they took it on the road in CA. and arrived a few weeks later recording the album before an audience. Super clean as a pin. This is on par with the Ventura (and the other sdbds) from Nearly Human/2nd Wind tour - not much hiss at all - Paul and Frank did it just right. ESSENTIAL.~ Tony
12/30/90 CHICAGO RIVERIA THEATER GIL IRELAND-ASHLEY (CASSETTE FROM MONITOR MIX) 56:59/51:16
Date Added:12/19/2005
Track List:CD ONE: (NO BEG) COMPASSION. SECRET SOCIETY/SOMETHING TO FALL BACK ON. CAN'T STOP RUNNING (FADES). GAYA'S EYES. LOVE IN ACTION. KINDNESS. LOST HORIZON/WHATS GOING ON/MERCY MERCY ME/I WANT YOU/LOST HORIZON/FEEL IT. CD TWO: ROCK LOVE. HELLO ITS ME. PUBLIC SERVANT.
Note:Holiday fun in Chi Town as was the custom in the 90s...great but loose set...members of 2nd Wind band...but playing stuff from last 2 tours...shows are different in bands for sure...band is oddly a mix of the 2 tours: Haskett…Strickland...Tagg...Urbano...Powell...Shandi...Michelle...Allred..Workman...very different Compassion...Can’t Stop Running races....and also fades...Gayas Eyes is an odd selection and one of Todd’s weaker tunes...Love In Action has Roger Powell solo — after which a joint is obviously passed...The Medley benefits from the looseness and Roger’s parts are sweet indeed...Feel It, however, does not benefit from the lack of tension...far too many notes played across the board...abrupt cut also...weird gate on snare-slapback...Todd gives a disclaimer...Todd announces "it’s Roger Powell!!!"...then the promoter/fan Joe Leonard pushes Urbano off the stand for Hello It’s Me in 6/8...Public Servant smacks of urban decay and alcohol buzz...very odd version, but I really like it all. ~ Tony
