Todd Rundgren/UTOPIA (and Related) Audio on CD-R ______ v06.2013

Greetings Audio Toddheads! Warren Hewetson (Atlanta, GA. USA) here. As most of you probably have already gathered; Tony Rogers and I have transferred all his audio collection over to my home in April of 2011. I don't speak for Tony, but in/around 2008, he had some exceptional changes in his family, business/practice, musicianship & life's interests. It somewhat prohibited his 'curatorship' of this vast historical collection of obscurities, rarities & Toddities. Me having been a long time friend, and somewhat of a 'side kick' collector/enthusiast; We (Tony & I) thought my 'sitrep' (58, single, IT guy in Atlanta with lots of TR history/archival collecting since 1973) would be ideal for taking over the 'Library' in all its glory. I plan to share openly, just as Tony did all these decades. Am I an authority? Hell no. But been following Todd in all forms of media ever since I saw/met him here at the Atlanta Fox Nov. 8 1973. So I know a little bit. I want to say a big THANK YOU in advance to all of you who are going to help and have helped with this so far. I’ll do my best. Write me anytime. twarrenh@bellsouth.net
Having said all that, I'll be making changes to some of Tony's descriptions here as a form of update. I like to give credit where credit is due too. So please forgive me if I do not credit the right persons involved in making these recordings available/possible. Feel free to correct me on who's responsible for what, but do not ask me to change artist information, line-ups, set-lists, venues and or dates. In addition, most of the Tubes related media will not be included in the collection. And from around 2008 and beyond; the library here is not covered too extensively. My partner in crime~ Jeff Gauss (Weavil) has offered to help me out with much of that. Visit: Weavil's Toddlist. With Jeff's help, this is arguably one of the (if not THE) largest most extensive archival collections of Todd's rare audio on the planet.
I do not have any rights to, and I am not open for sharing any material that may be listed below that has been commercially or officially released and is still available retail. (It may be listed below for collection listing purpose only). I do not take or give any money for a single item below either. I do not take away any proceeds that are due to Todd Rundgren, family, friends, business or supporting/associated musicians. If it is ROIO (recording of independent origin),then I'm open to share. Support the artist! Go buy his stuff where and whenever available! Speaking of which; the ultimate place to find/buy Todd's releases and imports & rarities is TRBAZAAR. Check it out ! If Scott ain't got it it, nobody does...just about!
I give Tony a ton of applause for his relentless cause of collecting this stuff from around the globe. You can write him at the TRconnection Forum and thank him too. We've also recently been working in collaboration with my friend Frank Bubnick and his well known vast quality collection (you can visit his list by clicking on his name). WOW! Maybe I can do a "Credits" list here below, on down the road. Like to make sure all the folks involved are appreciated. For now, let me go ahead and thank some folks that have really been intrumental in these archives (no particular order): Tony Rogers (of course), Jeff Gauss (Weavil), Frank Bubnick, Paul Russo, Hiroshi Kawauchi, Istvan, Roger Steel, Mike Adrian, Gil Ireland-Ashley, Gary Urwin, Don B., Bob Stanislowski (RIP), Micheal B., Jon Risen, Jon Babcock, Mark Wilpolt, Tom Cannon, Joe Franks, Richard Roys, Storm Hunter, Sara K., Moz, and players to be named later. Special thanks to Roger Linder for providing this page space for decades. Let's Rock!

Track List:TOO MUCH WATER. ROCK LOVE. IF I DIDN'T TRY. HAMMER IN MY HEART. ABANDON CITY. YOU MAKE ME CRAZY. ITCH IN MY BRAIN. LOVE WITH A THINKER. SWING TO THE RIGHT. TRAPPED. CRYBABY.
Note:Same CD as had made the rounds from before. Good job from an old source KBFH show.ESSENTIAL~ Warren
4/8/84 POUGHKEEPSIE THE CHANCE FM BROADCAST (2nd VERSION) 54:20/43:43
Date Added:2/10/2002
Track List:CD ONE: TOO MUCH WATER. ROCK LOVE. PRINCESS OF THE UNIVERSE. IF I DIDNT TRY. BRING ME MY LONGBOW. HAMMER IN MY HEART. ABANDON CITY. SET ME FREE. LYSISTRADA. ITCH IN MY BRAIN/LOVE WITH A THINKER. YOU MAKE ME CRAZY. SWING TO THE RIGHT CD TWO: THE VERY LAST TIME. TRAPPED. CARAVAN. LAST OF THE NEW WAVE RIDERS. CRYBABY. LOVE IS THE ANSWER.
Note:This is a great complete show thanks to some tracking and editing of the FM broadcasts (FM & CD...see entry above) of this show by Frank Bubnick. Very nice. This tour was the first that had that 'tech sound' (at that time) where the songs from Oblivion are featured.~ Warren
5/13/84 COAST TO COAST BALTIMORE MD AUDIENCE 75:54
Date Added:8/23/2002
Track List:TOO MUCH WATER. ROCK LOVE. PRINCESS OF THE UNIVERSE. IF I DIDNT TRY. LOVE OF THE COMMON MAN. HAMMER IN MY HEART. ABANDON CITY. SET ME FREE. ITCH IN MY BRAIN. LOVE WITH A THINKER. IM LOOKING AT YOU BUT IM TALKING TO MYSELF. YOU MAKE ME CRAZY. THE VERY LAST TIME. TRAPPED. LAST OF THE NEW WAVE RIDERS. CRYBABY.
Note:This transfer was mostly because of some of the performance contained. It is not as good as either the main FM shows, but the band is more confident here than either of those. It's an audience recording but quickly settles into a listenable document. The yap there does not distract from the performance. There are some adjustment problems on Too Much Water...If Didnt Try is a gem...Love of The Common Man sounds so high... can't believe he did it in this key for so long. Hammer In My Heart has a totally different feel to it than today. Willie just drives the bus home. Roger is smoking all night. Abandon City is merciless...Kazim and his bass playing while singing Set Me Free is suprising here...great stuff...Itch In My Brain is absolutely frantic - like in the midst of the end of the world - Todd ad-libs for awhile at the end of Thinker...missing from this due to yap and length considerations are: Lysistrada, Love In Action, JOV...the last 2 were somewhat marred...on this cd, you can hear the band saddle up on Willie for a ride. Willie really propels this show forward...this is one of his better ones (groove-wise). Again sound is not that great, so if lower fidelity bothers you, stay away and go to Chicago or Poughkeepsie...but hardcore collectors won't want to miss If I Didnt Try and Itch here~ Tony & Warren
5/24/84 MILWAUKEE THE PALMS THEATER AUDIENCE 65:05/68:30
Date Added:1/26/2003
Track List:CD ONE: TOO MUCH WATER. ROCK LOVE. PRINCESS OF THE UNVERSE. IF I DIDNT TRY. LOVE OF THE COMMON MAN. HAMMER IN MY HEART. ABANDON CITY. SET ME FREE. ITCH IN MY BRAIN/LOVE WITH A THINKER. IM LOOKING AT YOU BUT IM TALKING TO MYSELF. YOU MAKE ME CRAZY. SWING TO THE RIGHT. THE VERY LAST TIME. TRAPPED CD TWO: ROAD TO UTOPIA. CARAVAN. LAST OF THE NEW WAVE RIDERS. CRYBABY. LOVE IS THE ANSWER. JUST ONE VICTORY.
Note:Probably(in the old days) the most often traded 1984 show. And it sounds very good for an old audie..no it isn't better than the radio stuff Poughkeepsie/Chicago..but the performance is super. Some comments here: Willie's drumming on If I Didnt Try is super-great feel...Hammer sounds very different - groove wise...Abandon City crawls- it is real slow...makes for some great stuff happening. In fact, Todd's rhythm guitar on the mid set tunes shines...Itch In My Brain/Thinker is the best version performance wise - the guitar leads and ending of Thinker screams...Caravan - Roger goes freaky on the solos...at Crybaby, there is (w/ hysteria) a slight roughness to the sound which rebounds quickly in a few seconds. All in all, not the best sound, but nice and an exuberant performance...~ Tony & Warren

Date Added:1/29/2013
Track List:INTRO. BORN TO SYNTHESIZE. CLICHÉ. INTRO. HONEST WORK. ONE WORLD (WITH KASIM).
Note:Neat little 'one off' 19 minute set that Todd did for this Poetry Benefit in 1984. Just Todd with his guitar. Exceptional quality for an audience recording and One World (w/Kasim) is especially good. Thanks to Jon Babcock for dipping into his vaults for this little rare one.~ Warren
8/24/84 PIER 84 NEW YORK AUDIENCE BY MIKE ADRIAN 47:44/49:10

LOVE IS THE ANSWER. JUST ONE VICTORY.
Note:The exact equipment used to record this beauty was a Sony wm-D-6c with dolby on. With a set of shure mics. Mike Adrian was the recorder for this show. Thanks to Mike, as always, for this treasure.~ Warren
12/26/84 PROVIDENCE THE LIVING ROOM AUDIENCE 70:35
Track List:CD ONE: LOVE OF THE COMMON MAN. CLICHE'. IT WOULDNT HAVE MADE ANY DIFFERENCE. TOO FAR GONE. CAN WE STILL BE FRIENDS. SONG OF THE VIKING. BEARSVILLE/HONEST WORK. LYSISTRADA. TINY DEMONS. LORD CHANCELLOR'S NIGHTMARE SONG. BAD LADY. DRUNKEN BLUE ROOSTER. I'M SO PROUD/OOH BABY BABY/LA LA MEANS I LOVE YOU/I SAW THE LIGHT. ONE WORLD.THE WHEEL. A DREAM GOES ON FOREVER. BONUS: BANG ON THE DRUM ALL DAY (from this audience tape but unbearable to listen to. You don't want this bonus~ Warren)
Note:A pretty clean audience tape from the rarely talked about 1984 Winter tour. We edited out the TEPTAE video excerpts, and the way too noisy Bang On The Drum and get one CD of the ever evolving 1984 thing. Drunken Blue Rooster and Bag Lady make this nice and the pre-released Honest Work. You can hear Todd rail against Albert's label. Probably due to the lack of release to date of A Cappella.~ Warren

Note:Dececember solo tour. Todd performs solo on guitar and piano as well as singing some songs to pre-recorded backing via his cart machine. Excerpts from The Ever Popular Tortured Artist Effect video would be show throught the evening as well. He makes some mistakes during Too Far Gone. But what a great set. Good audience recording.~ Warren
