Largest Collection On The Globe of Todd Rundgren Audio Rarities

Greetings Audio Toddheads! Warren H. (Atlanta, GA. USA) here. Tony Rogers and I have transferred our entire audio collections over to my home in 2008. We (Tony & I) thought my circumstances (A 62 year old, single, IT specialist/Audio Editor guy in Atlanta with lots of Todd Rundgren history/archival collecting since 1972) would be ideal for taking over the 'Library' in all its glory. And, so an 'incorporation' of his and my colossal collections takes place! I now curate this ‘museum’. And I plan to share much of this, just as Tony did all these decades. And yes, I’m somewhat of a Todd Rundgren Historian. I have been 'following' Todd extensively (in all forms of media) ever since I saw (and met) him here at an Historic Show at Atlanta’s Fabulous Fox Theatre on November 8 1973. So I know 'enough'. Please note that I say share my enthusiasm. No buying or selling. Nor will a penny exchange hands. Never.
I want to say a big THANK YOU in advance to all of you who are going to help and have helped with this so far. I’ll do my best. Write me anytime. twarrenh@gmail.com
Just scroll down to the items listed below by period and click on any year to browse the collection.
We've also recently been working in collaboration with my friend Frank Bubnick and his well known vast quality collection (you can visit his list by clicking on his name). Some of his editing is unequaled anywhere.
And some late breaking neat news : I believe most of you are familiar with the JEMS group. A bunch of super collectors for many bands’ audience recordings (predominate though are Yes and Springsteen). Well known for their re-mastering prowess and quality. They’ve been in contact with me for a couple of years, and in December of last year offered me all their (originals) Todd Rundgren Collection. They just didn’t have the resources or the time for refining anything by Todd Rundgren. It just wasn’t on their timeline. I received all their cassettes (60) within a few weeks! Most of them are MASTER tapes from the original Taper. They will be sending me all their DATs and Reels at a later date. I will be listing all these recordings here, as I digitally transfer them. With this addition of the JEMS collection I believe these Todd Rundgren Archives are easily the largest collection on the planet.
How do we share you ask? Well, Just for what it's worth, we really don't do the 'snail mail trading' (by postal) much these days. So, if you would like me to share or trade any of this 'Catalog' with you, it would be more convenient/easiest to share in the form of on-line file transfer. Generally, in .flac format, compressed to .zip or .rar for smoother/faster quality exchange [depending upon the size of the audio file(s) we might be exchanging of course]. Hope that all makes sense. I can work with you on 'all that'. Again, write me, and then we'll come to an agreement of sorts. Please keep in mind, that anything that is 'Official', or 'Professionally Marketed', or still available for 'Retail' purchase is not of consideration. Nor is there any monetary means of transaction.
I do not have any rights to, and I am not open for sharing any material that may be listed below that has been commercially or officially released and is still available retail. (It may be listed below for collection listing purpose only). I do not take or give any money for a single item below either. I do not take away any proceeds that are due to Todd Rundgren, family, friends, business or supporting/associated musicians. If it is ROIO (recording of independent origin), then I'm open to share. Support the artist! Go buy his stuff where and whenever available! Speaking of which; an ultimate place to find/buy Todd's releases and imports & rarities is TRBAZAAR. Check it out! If Scott ain't got it, nobody does...just about! And of course many past official CD/DVD releases and proprietary Todd merchandise is readily available for ordering on-line at The Toddstore. So check them out for sure.
I like to give credit where credit is due too. So please forgive me if I do not credit the right persons involved in making these recordings available/possible for all these years.
I’ll start a ‘Credits’ list here below, and maintain it on down the road. Like to make sure all the folks involved are appreciated. For now, let me go ahead and thank some folks that have really been instrumental in these archives (no particular order): Tony Rogers (of course), Mike Armes, Jeff Gauss 'Weavil' (RIP), Frank Bubnick, Paul Russo, Hiroshi Kawauchi, Istvan Berzenczei, Sara Kritzer, Barry Beiseigel, Marc Linowitz, Rob 'Lockjaw' Levangie, Roger Steel, Mike Adrian, Gil Ireland-Ashley, Jim Farrell, Dale Michelsohn, Gary Urwin, Don B., Bob Stanislowski (RIP), Micheal B., Jon Risen, Jon Babcock, Mark Wilpolt, Tom Cannon, Lin Sprague, Joe Franks, Chris 'Razz', Geoff (& Rick) Laurenzo, Ted Moon, Richard Roys, Storm Hunter, Moz (Mike), Sohta Fujito, David Skye, Allen Law, Matt Walsh, Kevin Lewis, Doug Ford, Dave Knife, JEMS, Jared Houser, Gene Poole, 'Elegymart', Gail Artsgard, Victor Baissait, Connor Payne and players to be named later. Special thanks to Roger Linder for providing this page space for us for decades. Let's Rock!
BTW, I call this group of people 'My Cartel'. However, I have given the group a Media name: F451 Media (as in 451 Farenheit). It is not a brand name, for nothing of mine is for sale or has been sold EVER. It is a logo for these dedicated Todd Rundgren Collectors , which most of been doing this since the early 90s (and even earler). Our logo is:

Note:Another Geoff Laurenzo audience recording (from his Master Tapes). This turned out pretty good I think. It took a lot of 'toying' with. Some songs came out wonderful. Geoff is pleased with it so that’s all I care about, ‘Warren, I just downloaded this. I just listened to several songs on the pc. I agree it's pretty good. I can hear definition on vocals and instruments. Some of it was great, very clear, and the other parts I heard were still good. Don't have time tonight to hear it all, and need to burn it to cd for the stereo system. They all have sounded better there. I think other fans may like this one. ‘
Actually 22 Tracks. I couldn't patch 'Crazy Lady Blue' together. Too much of a 'gap' (Tape flip). So both parts appear hear as separate. During recording on the Second Tape Side B, seems Geoff had to conceal the recorder from security. So ‘Couldn’t I Just Tell You’, ‘Love Is The Answer & ‘Just One Victory’ were very muffled. I recovered them back fairly well, but they still suffer much and 'Just One Victory' stutters real bad near the end (Todd's guitar solo). This is ESSENTIAL just the same. Lot's of the 'il-acclaimed' 'Swing To The Right Here' (and a couple of Todd's solo 'Healing' tunes), and as we all know the Band was clad in military camouflage outfits for the Politics & war theme. I won't critique this, for I'm not particularly fond of 'Swing To The Right'(with the exception of'One World' & 'Lysistrata). Strange, there is no 'Lysistrata' here. Bearsville disliked it (‘Swing To The Right’) so much that they delayed release of the album until 1982.~ Warren

Note:There is going to be a few entries here on this famous show. For newly uncovered versions are showing up as of recent. There were two shows played this evening (April 3 1981) and Jon Risen has shared with us the entire...virtually complete...second show's video. So we have dubbed the soundtrack from that. And my buddy Geoff Laurenzo (audience) recorded the complete first show. So all this will be listed here.
This particular piece (above) is the entire old KBFH LP (excluding commercials) transferred with great results. Some very slight surface noise, but a great high volume transfer. This show was also professionally filmed for the 'Camoflauge' video (TV presentation and official DVD release; "Utopia Live At The Royal Oak". A classic. Sound is good. And just a few of the film's audio missing pieces are included here too. It was all puzzled together with the live FM radio broadcast (Warren).Ya gotta love the pre-intro story to Lysistrata... priceless. The DVD is available on-line retail through the Toddstore or Amazon, just to name a few and through Scott at TRBAZAAR . A good buy. So please check out my other entries here.~ Warren

Note:Another very cool audience MASTER tape recording by my buddy Geoff Laurenzo. But having said that; these two tapes of the show have some severe physical condition problems (which can be expected after 35 Years). They were a mess. No matter what player I am using, or what software- unfortunate spike/click anomalies are throughout. Adobe Audition in particular seems to be very temperamental. So if you are an extreme audiophile, using your graphics spectrum analyzers or any other nyquist prompts (or whatever YOU people deem to call it), then don't bother analyzing these recordings. For the tracks have more mostly inaudible spikes & static than an extraterrestrial communication, and more wrinkles that a 2000 year old mummy. There are just some things that are out of our hands. Some tracks are channel changing messes (in particular ‘Love of The Common Man’ has two or three skips…’Feel to Good is ‘all over the place’ and encore ‘Couldn’t I Just tell You’ is pretty shakey. But a helluvalot of this is great, with some surprises.
I have pretty good hearing, excellent stereo equipment, and excellent headphones. And as for mentioned, the errors are mostly inaudible to the human ear. But, very visible on visual graphs and analytical boards.
So, everybody would enjoy this transfer. Geoff loves it.... and that's what matters to me. For this very rare historic record is the first evening show of infamous 1981-04-03 The Royal Oak Music Theatre Detroit MI. Show. (Which is not to be confused with the second show which was recorded for the KBFH **see in my other entries**(and Jon Risen has found us the video of the ENTIRE last show that Evening...and thank you Jon for that!)
Much of what I have done here, is good (dayamn good). For the most part, if you can get past the knicks, skips and scratches; this is super rare and collectable and an extremely enjoyable show recording. Just enjoy it (and you will) for what it is. It’s so very rare and ESSENTIAL and one for the trophy shelf. And thanks once again to the ever faithful Geoff! You know it's funny with the lack of any glorious colored lighting for these show. They're mostly just white 'limelight'. Geoff says, 'It was a bit odd, as they had bright lights on (for video) that illuminated the front half of the theater. And Karen with baby Rex. It was a different dynamic. I remember being riveted just the same.' ~ Warren

Jon Risen has recently provided us with a new version of the professionally filmed video in it entirety. It’s all here folks…the tuning…banter…cut outs from the Pro release and lot’s of surprises. So thanks to Jon for helping us make this historic record complete now. This is THE audio recording to have from the second show. ESSENTIAL and so very rare.~ Warren

Note:A rare audience recording courtesy of Hiroshi. I didn't even know it was 'out there', so this is a real treat. A extremely good recording, with the full set for us, from the Spring of 1981, where the band was introducing us to 'Swing to the Right' and 'Healer'. Of course, this was commonly known among fans as the 'Camouflage' tour. This taping has some humming and some distortion. These flaws are much evident during the first few tunes, but the phonics improves muchly over the course of the 106 mins. I keep finding myself forgetting that this tape is 32 years old. We can say so much about this show. The band was tight and very high polished here for the Chicago crowd (as was the case for the whole tour). Audience chatter is not overwhelming either. The beauty is that we have much recorded history from Chicago (then and now). Much thanks to Hiroshi!~ Warren

JUST ONE VICTORY.
Note:Hiroshi & Joe have done wonders with this always intriguing, but frustrating, soundboard that we've had for years – volume changes warble the first three tunes and hiss had plagued this but, it has been given new life by these two seperate treatments. So I take the best of the two tweeks and it makes for one fine recording (except the opener,One World, which I think was hopeless to repair). Eye witness evidence points to this date being in April of 1981.

Notes: This show was one of the premeire coast to coast broadcasts that this great band did - this was while the 'Swing To The Right' album was being held up for contract negotiations (eventually involving Todd as well). The next product would see a label change. This show revealed that despite how low on the priority Utopia was worth Bearsville, the tunes held up well... and the band still kicked ass live as this attests to. They performed to a small house too. Well known harcore Todd Fan/ex-Todd Roadie/our Pal/guitarist Joe Megna was there! It was broadcast/hosted by WAAF 107.3 FM Worchester, yet Warren recorded it as it was fed live that night on his 96Rock FM Atlanta.~ Tony
7/5/81 UTOPIA PIER 16 DR. PEPPER MUSIC FESTIVAL NEW YORK NY AUDIENCE RECORDING (PARTIAL SHOW)BY GENE POOLE (COURTESY OF ELEGYMART') 55:41

Note:This one just in to me, as well, from a very generous fellow only known as 'Elegymart'. This Show, though partial, is super rare and not in circulation anywhere. I do see however, that 'Elegymart' has posted all three Shows he sent me on Traders Den now. Recorded by Gene Poole, who is now known for his vast number of rare New York Recordings.
This one was another toughy, it had some 'Synthesized Noise" that I had to adjust. Then I brought the highlights up front (mostly vocals). And on "The Up' the right channels first 30 seconds were very distorted, so I adjusted that (but those 30 seconds are mono).
This is now an awesome representation of one of Utopia historic Shows. For all Central Park Concerts were closed now, because of neighborhoods nearby complaining of a noise factor. So the Dr. Pepper Music Festival (formerly Schaefer) was moved to Pier 16 (in the South Street Seaport). However as Central Park was, or all New York Shows for that matter, audiences that are very yappy, noisy and rowdy. There is loud audience throughout every tune here. But Utopia's performance is clear and brilliant. And The Band is tight.
We could very well be missing; Lysistrata, Back On The Street, Time Heals , Healer, Compassion, Shot In The Dark, Caravan, Love In Action, Last Of The New Wave Riders, Couldn't I Just Tell You, Love Is The Answer & Just One Victory. But ESSENTIAL. And Thank You Gene Poole and 'Elegymart'! ~ Warren

Note:Another 1981 audience recording from the ever faithful Geoff Laurenzo. It's good but not great. Recorded from a distance it seems at times. Another struggle to get the distortion out of the second tape. Pretty much for the die hard collector. But rare and very much listenable just the same. A very different set here, and a very long show (unless this is portions of two sets like Utopia had just performed on April 3rd in Detroit). I've never heard 'Just One Victory' appear in the middle of a set either. Some of the tracks came out wonderful however. Though a good portion are a mixture of high and low levels, and some I just did the best I could to roll off severe bass or trebles. As Royal Oak showed us; Utopia was performing pretty much flawlessly at this time. Again this very strange set has a lot of 'Adventures', some 'Deface the Music', some 'Swing to the Right' (which Bearsville wouldn't release until late 1982), some 'Healing' and very much surprises of 'Cliche', 'I Saw The Light' and a brief 'Blues Improvision' tune. We thank Geoff so much for once again allowing us to use his MASTER tapes to transfer from. For this is a very rare and very much collectable recording~ Warren

This show has a great setlist - pre-release Swing To The Right, but all of 'em are there...The band was hot as hell then, and hear how slow they play Caravan...cool angle. We also get a never before heard REO Speedwagon razzing before Cliche... "They're imitating, making fun of us..." Todd actually sings some of "...Heard it from a friend who..." Note:Another find of a King Biscuit Disc that provides us of the whole event (which we did not have in the collection until now). Awsome event too! This thing’s ESSENTIAL! Todd & Friends performance first and then Derringer & Friends. The paperwork that came with the disc set reads:
It was billed as "A Special Evening with Rick Derringer and Friends." Calling it that was an understatement to say the least, because the music (and the evening itself) was incredibly special and Rick Derringer was certainly surrounded by a lot of very important friends. Among them: Daryl Hall & John Oates; ex-Mott the Hoople leader, Ian Hunter; Edgar Winter; Dr. John; Meatloaf sidekick, Karla DeVito; and vocalist Lorna Luft. In reality, the concert was a benefit show, and the charity was none other than Rick Derringer himself. Just a few weeks prior to this concert, Derringer had been on the road gigging with his band in mid-1981, when the truck containing all their equipment was stolen. Unable to replace the truck and gear himself, Derringer and his band were suddenly in serious peril. Help, however, was on the way, and arrived when a friend, singer Lorna Luft, came up with the idea to do the special show. Within days of the robbery, she started calling other artists, many of whom had benefited from Rick's work as a guitarist and producer over the years. In less than a week, she had assembled an all-star lineup.
Derringer remembers the time as if it were yesterday, "This was a huge loss for us because everything was in that truck: rare guitars, all the stage equipment, the PA equipment, the stage lights, the stage clothes. Everything was stolen and it was never found. What really hurt was the fact that we had no insurance. We were between companies and our old policy had lapsed. We had lost everything. We had to cancel a bunch of shows and we had no idea how to get back on our feet, when Lorna thought of the idea to do a benefit show to raise money so we could replace the truck and the equipment. We did it at the Palladium Theater in New York City about five or six weeks after the equipment theft, in 1981." Shortly after the concert was announced, the King Biscuit Flower Hour radio show stepped in and offered to record the show and broadcast it nationwide. "The folks at King Biscuit had heard about the show, and asked to broadcast it," says Derringer. "I had done several King Biscuit shows with the Edgar Winter Group. We had been talking to them about doing a Derringer band show for a while, and they decided to do this one." Derringer opened the show with his core band: bassist Donnie Kisselbach, drummer Jimmy Wilcox; and keyboardist Benjy King (later an A&R exec for Columbia Records). From a musical standpoint, this show is certainly rough around the edges, considering the fact that it was done on the spot, and without the aid of extensive rehearsals. But the energy level is palpable - from a spunky version of the Derringer classic "Let Me In," through the soulful ballad" (I Think I'm Gonna) Jump, Jump, Jump" (which features inspired solos by both King and Derringer), to the rave-up closer, his all-time classic, "Rock And Roll Hoochie Koo." And appropriately, the first guest to join Derringer and his band for this legendary show was singer Lorna Luft.
"Lorna is Liza Minelli's sister," says Derringer." She had wanted to break out of the show music scene and wanted to sing rock 'n' roll. I had done a single with her called 'It's A Long Time'. Her rock career never really happened but she was a good friend, and it was her inspiration that fueled the show itself." After a couple more songs on his own, Derringer brought up Daryl Hall and John Oates, who offered an inspired mini-set of R&B classics that included the Smokey Robinson & The Miracles "Goin' To A Go-Go", Arthur Conley's "Funky Broadway" and Sam & Dave's legendary "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby." Joining the Derringer crew for the Hall & Oates segment were long time H&O members T-Bone Wolk on bass (later to become a charter member of the Saturday Night Live Band) and drummer Mickey Curry from T-Rex and The Cure.
Hall & Oates were followed by Dr. John and Edgar Winter, who teamed up with the Derringer band for a funky re-working of "Right Place, Wrong Time." Next up was Ian Hunter, who did one of his biggest solo hits, "Just Another Night (On The Other Side)," as well as a lesser known ode to the Big Apple called "Central Park & West." Hunter then segued into a medley of the Mott/Bowie classic "All The Young Dudes" blended with "Roll Away The Stone." It brought the house down.
"In some ways I was surprised, but in many ways I wasn't," says Derringer, speaking of the show fourteen years later. "I had supported all these people over the years and done a lot of favors. It certainly was gratifying, even though it was sort of pay back time for me."
Throughout the rest of the '80s, and into the early '90s, Derringer remained a steady touring act, but essentially stopped making new records. Finally, in 1993, he returned to the recording studio after a seven-year absence with Back to the Blues, a compelling collection of blues rock originals, followed by Electra Blues in 1994. In 2002, he released an unexpected jazz album entitled Free Ride. Derringer remains a road warrior to this day, continually pleasing a loyal following of fans with energetic live shows similar to the one captured here for the King Biscuit Flower Hour.

Note:This is a strange recording that turned out to be a hidden flower once the low end was rolled off the tape. The bass does distort, but there is amazing clarity in this old great audience recording. Kind of strange up until Lowest Common Denominator- then the set really kicks into gear by Disc Two. Highlights: Crazy Lady Blue, Healer, Caravan, New Wave Riders, Last Dollar...just a nice, nice overlooked recording from this pre-Swing tour.~ Warren

Note:Nice to have this one. We have the great audience recording of this whole show (see entry above). The as always classic KBFH people captured much of it professionally ('soundboard') here though. Seven months after the Detroit Royal Oak Show (KBFH & VHS Release of most the Show) and Still 'Pre-Swing' - Includes treasures 'Only Human' & 'The Up'. And the Band rushs right into each tune without pause here. Fastest 34 minutes that I've ever heard. Not even the pre 'Lysistrata Story'. Don't know if or when this aired FM. This is from the KBFH CD (which was never actually released to the public market). Fun to match this against the audience above recording. ESSENTIAL~ Warren

Note:There are better recordings from this tour. Sounds like the hall had lots of reverb, plus the yap, makes this an just an 'OK' audience recording. And we can always use more from this very first solo (w/o band) Todd tour of all time...His performance is pretty good here.~ Warren
