Todd Rundgren/UTOPIA (and Related) Audio on CD-R ______ v05.2013

Greetings Audio Toddheads! Warren Hewetson (Atlanta, GA. USA) here. As most of you probably have already gathered; Tony Rogers and I have transferred all his audio collection over to my home in April of 2012. I don't speak for Tony, but in/around 2008, he had some exceptional changes in his family, business/practice, musicianship & life's interests. It somewhat prohibited his 'curatorship' of this vast historical collection of obscurities, rarities & Toddities. Me having been a long time friend, and somewhat of a 'side kick' collector/enthusiast; We (Tony & I) thought my 'sitrep' (58, single, IT guy in Atlanta with lots of TR history/archival collecting since 1973) would be ideal for taking over the 'Library' in all its glory. I plan to share openly, just as Tony did all these decades. Am I an authority? Hell no. But been following Todd in all forms of media ever since I saw/met him here at the Atlanta Fox Nov. 8 1973. So I know a little bit. I want to say a big THANK YOU in advance to all of you who are going to help and have helped with this so far. I’ll do my best. Write me anytime. twarrenh@bellsouth.net
Having said all that, I'll be making changes to some of Tony's descriptions here as a form of update. I like to give credit where credit is due too. So please forgive me if I do not credit the right persons involved in making these recordings available/possible. Feel free to correct me on who's responsible for what, but do not ask me to change artist information, line-ups, set-lists, venues and or dates. In addition, most of the Tubes related media will not be included in the collection. And from around 2008 and beyond; the library here is not covered too extensively. My partner in crime~ Jeff Gauss (Weavil) has offered to help me out with much of that. Visit: Weavil's Toddlist. With Jeff's help, this is arguably one of the (if not THE) largest most extensive archival collections of Todd's rare audio on the planet.
I do not have any rights to, and I am not open for sharing any material that may be listed below that has been commercially or officially released and is still available retail. (It may be listed below for collection listing purpose only). I do not take or give any money for a single item below either. I do not take away any proceeds that are due to Todd Rundgren, family, friends, business or supporting/associated musicians. If it is ROIO (recording of independent origin),then I'm open to share. Support the artist! Go buy his stuff where and whenever available! Speaking of which; the ultimate place to find/buy Todd's releases and imports & rarities is TRBAZAAR. Check it out ! If Scott ain't got it it, nobody does...just about!
I give Tony a ton of applause for his relentless cause of collecting this stuff from around the globe. You can write him at the TRconnection Forum and thank him too. We've also recently been working in collaboration with my friend Frank Bubnick and his well known vast quality collection (you can visit his list by clicking on his name). WOW! Maybe I can do a "Credits" list here below, on down the road. Like to make sure all the folks involved are appreciated. For now, let me go ahead and thank some folks that have really been intrumental in these archives (no particular order): Tony Rogers (of course), Jeff Gauss (Weavil), Frank Bubnick, Paul Russo, Hiroshi Kawauchi, Istvan, Roger Steel, Mike Adrian, Gil Ireland-Ashley, Gary Urwin, Don B., Bob Stanislowski (RIP), Micheal B., Jon Risen, Jon Babcock, Mark Wilpolt, Tom Cannon, Joe Franks, Richard Roys, Storm Hunter, Sara K., Moz, and players to be named later. Special thanks to Roger Linder for providing this page space for decades. Let's Rock!

5/78 ‘RUNDGREN COMES ALIVE’ ONION HEAD EP VINYL TRANSFER WARREN 15:05
Date Added:6/9/2012
Track List:SIDE 1: BREAD (4:15) (RECORDED FOR 'MIDNIGHT SPECIAL' MAY 16 1978 AT NBC STUDIO 2)/ SOMETIMES I DON'T KNOW HOW TO FEEL (3:51) (RECORDED FOR 'MIDNIGHT SPECIAL' AUGUST 8 1978 AT NBC STUDIO 2) SIDE 2: NEVER NEVER LAND (1:47) (ROXY MAY 17 1978 LATE SHOW)/ LORD CHANCELLOR'S NIGHTMARE SONG (2:58) (ROXY MAY 21 1978 LATE SHOW)/ YOU CRIED WOLF (2:14) (WITH WOLFMAN JACK RECORDED FROM THE ROXY BROADCAST)
Note:EP LP release in 1978 on Onion Head Records (legit label? We don’t know). Rare only for it’s inclusion of one of the three rare takes of Bread (5/16/78) and The Roxy late show (5/1778) of Never Never Land~ Warren
5/12/78 NEW YORK CITY THE BOTTOM LINE WNEW FM 63:11/73:56
Date Added:7/4/2001
Track List:CD ONE: INTRO/WNEW. REAL MAN. IT WOULDNT HAVE MADE ANY DIFFERENCE. LOVE OF THE COMMON MAN. THE RANGE WAR. LOVE IN ACTION. NEVER NEVER LAND. YOU CRIED WOLF. UNCHAINED MELODY. WNEW JINGLE. WHO WROTE THE BOOK OF LOVE?. CAN WE STILL BE FRIENDS?. BREAD, DONT YOU EVER LEARN?. DUST IN THE WIND. THE VERB "TO LOVE". CD TWO: A DREAM GOES ON FOREVER. IM SO PROUD/OOH BABY BABY/LA LA MEANS I LOVE YOU/I SAW THE LIGHT. EASTERN INTRIGUE. INITIATION. COULDNT I JUST TELL YOU HELLO ITS ME. JUST ONE VICTORY. HANG ON SLOOPY. OUTRO/WNEW.
Note:What a great fun relaxed show to groove to. The source is the low generation tape we got from long time Toddhead Brian Welsh. The WNEW crew does a good job of explaining the tour, but calls Kazim a former member and says Moogy is the only Utopia member in the band (not true at all- Willie wise). Dust In The Wind sung by Moogy nicely. Bread- some balance vol wise. Problems as on the Midnight Special version occurs here. But Todd really nails the leads. A very strange version of Verb to Love where it started way too fast, and never gets back to the correct speed.. Rick derringer on Soul Medley & Sloopy. This is a long standing classic that sounds great.~ Tony ESSENTIAL
5/13/78 NEW YORK CITY THE BOTTOM LINE SBD & SOME GREAT AUDIE??- ISTVAN
Date Added:5/1/2006
Track List:CD ONE: REAL MAN. SOMETIMES I DONT KNOW WHAT TO FEEL. LOVE OF THE COMMON MAN. THE RANGE WAR. LOVE IN ACTION. NEVER NEVER LAND. YOU CRIED WOLF. CAN WE STILL BE FRIENDS. DONT YOU EVER LEARN. DUST IN THE WIND (MOOGY SINGING) CD TWO: A DREAM GOES ON FOREVER. IM SO PROUD/OOH BABY BABY/LA LA MEANS I LOVE YOU/I SAW THE LIGHT. EASTERN INTRIGUE. INITIATION. HELLO ITS ME (CUTS IN). JUST ONE VICTORY.
Note:I dont know at this point what is what... considering all the ones out on the Japan label and the sdbs that have made it out...one day someone will sit down and try to distinguish these recordings- I dont doubt this date as it is valid, but theres a lot of these out there, and I would like to think we'e got em all close to covered by now...in my opinion, one of the very best sets of music he's ever done, and some of the core central shows of Todddom....Bread is really a cooker on here...Dust fades at the solo but what a nice addition to the scene...great find Istvan!!~ Tony
5/14/78 NEW YORK THE BOTTOM LINE (EARLY & LATE SHOWS) SOUNDBOARD (EDITED & ENHANCED BUBNICK/RUSSO) 67:25/72:46/39:42
Track List:CD ONE (EARLY SHOW): REAL MAN. SOMETIMES I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO FEEL. LOVE OF THE COMMON MAN. THE RANGE WAR. LOVE IN ACTION. NEVER NEVER LAND. YOU CRIED WOLF. UNCHAINED MELODY. BOOK OF LOVE. CAN WE STILL BE FRIENDS?. BLACK MARIA. DON'T YOU EVER LEARN?. THE VERB TO LOVE. A DREAM GOES ON FOREVER. VIDEO CHAT. I'M SO PROUD/OOH BABY BABY/LA LA MEANS I LOVE YOU/I SAW THE LIGHT.
CD TWO (LATE SHOW): REAL MAN IT WOULDN'T HAVE MADE ANY DIFFERENCE. LOVE OF THE COMMON MAN. LADY FACE. BLACK AND WHITE. NEVER NEVER LAND. YOU CRIED WOLF. BREAD. ZEN ARCHER. THE LAST RIDE. CLICHE'. VIDEO CHAT. EASTERN INTRIGUE. INITIATION. DETERMINATION.
CD THREE (PART TWOS OF BOTH): EARLY SHOW: EASTERN INTRIGUE. INITIATION. COULDN'T I JUST TELL YOU. HELLO, IT'S ME. JUST ONE VICTORY. LATE SHOW: INTROS/HELLO IT'S ME. LOVE IS THE ANSWER
Note:Take a trip back to 1978 and you have tickets for both shows. Great sounding board show (another Bubnick/Russo ehanced gem). We know the Japanese release 'begged' from this, but this is a must have for the 'seriously into it' in 1978 (of which we are old enough to remember well)...~ Tony & Warren ESSENTIAL

Track List:CAN WE STILL BE FRIENDS TAKE 1. CAN WE STILL BE FRIENDS TAKE 2. INTRO I TO BREAD TAKE 1. INTRO II TO BREAD TAKE 1. BREAD TAKE 1. YOU CRIED WOLF. BREAD TAKE 2. BREAD TAKE 3.
Note:Here's what a couple of you asked for. The obscure 'Midnight Special Takes'. Very interesting to say the least. You can hear the MC trying to keep the studio audience silent for 'preparations' and then directs them to applause at just the right moments! This is from 1st Generation reel (reel to reel canister)! ESSENTIAL~ Warren
5/21/78 THE ROXY LOS ANGELES AUDIENCE(GIL IRELAND-ASHLEY) 58:04/56:51
Date Added:5/10/2012
Track List:CD ONE: REAL MAN. SOMETHIES I DONT KNOW WHAT TO FEEL. LOVE OF THE COMMON MAN. LADYFACE. BLACK AND WHITE. LORD CHANCELLORS NIGHTMARE SONG. YOU CRIED WOLF. UNCHAINED MELODY. (WHO WROTE THE) BOOK OF LOVE. CAN WE STILL BE FRIENDS. BLACK MARIA. ZEN ARCHER. DUST IN THE WIND (SUNG BY MOOGY). CD TWO: THE LAST RIDE. CLICHE. ALL THE CHILDREN SING(VIDEO). IM SO PROUD/OOH BABY BABY/LA LA MEANS I LOVE YOU/I SAW THE LIGHT. EASTERN INTRIGUE. INITIATION. DETERMINATION. HELLO ITS ME. LOVE IS THE ANSWER. JUST ONE VICTORY.
Note:A one of a kind document for sure..we think this is one of the shows that ended up having tracks on the Japanese Nippon Series...Sound is yappy but is very nice at times... great in fact for an 1978 audience tape...a really nice You Cried Wolf...some zipper cuts at end of Determination (which is pretty nice but the backgrounds dont quite make it)...a huge hole in the center of Initiation..the tune is just not meant to be played with a grand piano as the only keyboard..it misses Roger bad - not Moogy's fault though, he does very well..just not suited to the piano trio concept - its far too complicated for that..great great show..and decent audie of it. Thanks Gil for capturing it!~ Warren
5/23/78 THE ROXY LOS ANGELES FAMOUS MICROWAVE RADIO BCAST (WARREN RECORDED OFF 96ROCK FM ATLANTA) 68:39/63:16
Date Added:7/4/2001
Track List:CD ONE: WOLFMAN JACK INTRO. REAL MAN. IT WOULDNT HAVE MADE ANY DIFFERENCE. LOVE OF THE COMMON MAN. LADYFACE. LOVE IN ACTION. NEVER NEVER LAND. YOU CRIED WOLF. THE RANGE WAR. BREAD. CAN WE STILL BE FRIENDS?. BLACK MARIA. DONT YOU EVER LEARN?. SOMETIMES I DONT KNOW WHAT TO FEEL. BLACK AND WHITE. CD TWO: A DREAM GOES ON FOREVER. IM SO PROUD/OOH BABY BABY/LA LA MEANS I LOVE YOU/I SAW THE LIGHT. EASTERN INTRIGUE. INITIATION. COULDNT I JUST TELL YOU. HELLO ITS ME. HANG ON SLOOPY. SHES GONE. JUST ONE VICTORY.
Note:Wolfman Jack adorns this classic from the Back To The Bars recording show series in LA. Some high end strangeness results from the microwave method, but still sounds great for a 78 show. "...I can feel it microwaving all over the country..."~ Todd. Stevie nicks (probably thru Fishkin) added to the usual participants as well as- Spencer Davis harp on Range War (the BTTB version was this show for sure). Black Maria as well. Hall & Oates guest on Sometimes I Dont Know...She's Gone is good as well. Many sections where the Hello People do the 50s style station IDs during the program. Lotsa fun. Another classic."...For those of you at home; my guitar just got a round of applause..."~ Todd. These taped versions were recorded via TEAC cassette recorder directly off (96Rock FM Atlanta)the live feed Radio Broadcast that night (Station/IDs & all) Unfortunately this has been co-opted for profit by bootleggers around the globe.~ Warren ESSENTIAL

Note:Another obscure release. No Longer in print and very difficult to find. Less of a ‘New Orleans ‘ sound on this one and a touch of synthesizer. All star musician ensemble (Todd, Rick Derringer, Jan hammer, Shuckett, Siegler, Siomos, Fanny…amoung others). ESSENTIAL~ Warren

YOU CRIED WOLF. GANGRENE. A DREAM GOES ON FOREVER. BLACK AND WHITE. CD TWO: EASTERN INTRIGUE. INITIATION. COULDN'T I JUST TELL YOU. HELLO, IT'S ME. JUST ONE VICTORY.
Note:This is a great sounding 20+ yr old radio FM broadcast baked to perfection by Frank Bubnick and Paul Russo. But, we need to give most the credit to Don B. for making this one possible to the collection~ Warren

Note:See above as this is a typical BTTB bcast. From the Bootleg vinyl. Funny they deemed to call it that. Not much Hermit was performed.~ Warren

8/21/78 NEW YORK CITY CENTRAL PARK AUDIENCE 74:07/67:42
Track List:CD ONE: REAL MAN. IT WOULDNT HAVE MADE ANY DIFFERENCE. LOVE OF THE COMMON MAN. TRAPPED. ABANDON CITY. THE VERB TO LOVE. THE SEVEN RAYS. CAN WE STILL BE FRIENDS. THE DEATH OF ROCK AND ROLL. YOU CRIED WOLF. GANGRENE. A DREAM GOES ON FOREVER. BLACK MARIA. EASTERN INTRIGUE. INITIATION. CD TWO: COULDNT I JUST TELL YOU. HELLO ITS ME. JUST ONE VICTORY.
Note:This was acquired from John Pellerito and is surprisingly low on the yap factor being an NYC show. The sound is decent for an audience recording and presents the usual BTTB set with Utopia- you can tell the band is up for it and the sound is also surprisingly not that distant.~ Tony

Note:This one is pretty awsome. But whoever tracked it from it's original sourge did some fade outs and fade ins...and there is a megasecond of silence between tracks (once mp3s at some point?)~ Warren
8/25/78 "LOOKING AT US" CHICAGO PARK WEST (LP SLEEVE SAYS PHILADELPHIA) OLD BOOTLEG VINYL (DIGITAL TRANSFER WARREN) 51:13
Date Added:9/23/2012
Track List:BROTHER JOAN (TRAPPED). BAD LUCK CITY (ABANDON CITY). LOOKING FOR A LOVE (THE VERB TO LOVE). SEVEN RAYS (THE SEVEN RAYS). CAN WE STILL BE FRIENDS. DAY OF THE ROCK N' ROLL (DEATH OF ROCK AND ROLL). FUNKY DETROIT MADNESS (YOU CRIED WOLF). CAN'T BE SATISFIED (GANGRENE). MY DREAM LIVES ON FOREVER (A DREAM GOES ON FOREVER). PLEASE LET ME GO (BLACK MARIA)
Note:The crazy 70s Boot vinyl, that most of us oldtimers have, that is obviously the product of someone who doesn't know shit about Todd. The titles are funny. The record has the encyclopedia of rock listing for Todd and gang and the "Another Live" inside shot on front. It also says 3/29/49! This is not Todds Bday, so we dont know what thats about. Probably comes from the same place "Philadelphia" or "Funky Detroit Madness" did. Nevertheless, this is a classic and long overdue addition to the Todd stash.~ Tony
8/30/78 BOSTON PARADISE THEATER FM- DIGITAL TRANSFER HOME STUDIO 69:41/75:11
Date Added:2/27/2001

DEATH OF ROCK AND ROLL. YOU CRIED. GANGRENE. A DREAM GOES ON FOREVER. BLACK MARIA CD TWO: EASTERN INTRIGUE. INITIATION. COULDNT I JUST TELL YOU. HELLO ITS ME. JUST ONE VICTORY.
Note:As any fan knows, this tour damn near yielded great FM broadcasts in every city they hit. This was the last show of the tour before Todd went to Europe with the Tubes to generate excitement about the upcoming Remote Control recording sessions. Very low generation (1st gen?). Roger really eats it up on this one, great solos on Abandon City and Seven Rays. This also may be the only time time Todd has ever referred to himself as the "Runt" (before You Cried Wolf).~ Tony

Note:A nameless Fan sent this to me. I tried to re-eq some (to good effect) to add to the archive project. The sound is clear, but sounds to me as if it there was a large limiter somewhere in the process. It gets markedly (its not really ever that bad) better after Death of R-n-R. This is an "in stride" performance from the band at their peak (in my opinion). Because of the gig schedule, I dont think the band ever again played as well as they did on this tour with this material, etc. Here is a very good (but old) line recording that serves up a couple of ass whippin versions Black & White and Initiation... just to show everyone how its supposed to be played, and to remind everyone that Utopia WAS THE best live performing band of that era- gig after gig- night after night.~ Tony

Note:This is a bootleg CD- which means someone did the thing themselves, makes it look like official product and then sells it for cash with no money going to the artist...not a good thing. It sounds great like all the 78 Bcasts do... missing probably a tune or two from the show. Nice on the artwork. Evidently, this is part of series of illegal shows for sale- they probably all sound good, but I have absolutely nothing to do with it.~ Tony

Note:Tattered old Broadcast form the BTTB tour, brought back to life by Hiroshi. This is one that sound quality is limited due to the source, but a great performance. Roger was just back from the Bowie tour and he lets loose with some inspired soloing..an amazing Seven Rays...crowd is crazed and loud...this was the Utopia show of my youth. Love this era. Thanks to Hiroshi and hours of work to preserve the old stuff.~ Tony
11/7/78 WASHINGTON DC THE BAYOU FM RADIO 70:54/51:06
Date Added:9/23/2012
Track List:CD ONE: REAL MAN. IT WOULDNT HAVE MADE ANY DIFFERENCE. LOVE OF THE COMMON MAN. TRAPPED. ABANDON CITY. THE VERB TO LOVE. THE SEVEN RAYS. CAN WE STILL BE FRIENDS?. DEATH OF ROCK AND ROLL. YOU CRIED WOLF. GANGRENE. A DREAM GOES ON FOREVER. BLACK MARIA. CD TWO: EASTERN INTRIGUE. INITIATION. COULDNT I JUST TELL YOU. HELLO ITS ME. JUST ONE VICTORY. FM OUTRO.
Note:I did this '78 DC show because my friends were there. The Bayou is gone now, and it was a great performance. The sound is good, but not perfect due to a noisy line coming from the radio station but it is FM and is actually quite good for the most part. From my small hometown of Keyser WV, we packed the place with close to 50 of the crew... but not me... I heard the show at home due to an important college assignment. I can hear my name called out when Todd talks about the broadcast, and can hear friends I know/knew to this day. What a trip. Roger really has a terrific soloing night, as he did often in these days-the dueling solos on Oops shows was what this band was all about. The effort Todd gives vocally was always there..not even on a bad night could you ever say Todd wasnt trying in these days..the band always left it on the stage with effort. Kazim hits a peak on Verb and Initiation (playing wise). Gangrene is a mess as usual during what Todd called " a pointless ego trip to prove why we play what we do"... This switching of instruments would soon end. Another great thing about this is the post show; where it is revealed all shows are sold out for days to come. The energy is high, as said above; and the usual kick of Initiation into CIJTY is higher than normal octane. Todd talks about the his Papal wishes weirdly in connection with a Dream Goes On Forever... and the crowd chants "thai stick" before Black Maria.~ Tony

Note:Actually we have audience cassettes of many of the London Venue Club Shows: The 16th (Early & Late Shows), 17th (Late show), 20th (Late show) and 21st. The 18th was canceled. But this one is only one we deemed necessary to transfer. It has some distortion but an awsome audience recording from the end of the year 1978. And what a year that was!.~ Warren
