Very clean storebought like transfer. Other tunes are slow weirdness like the stuff on his solo debut. The vocal disco tunes were aimed (i guess) at the euro disco scene.. |

The source is the low gen tape i got from long time head brian welsh. the wnew crew does a good jo of explaining the tour but calls kaz a former member and says moogy is the only utopia member in the band (not true at all- willie was). Dust sung by moogster nicely. Bread-same balance vol wise probs as on the midnight special version occurs here. but tr really nails the leads. A very strange version of verb to love where it started way too fast and never gets back to the correct speed.. rick derringer on soul medley, sloopy. this is a long standing classic that sounds great and has been overdue on cd for a long while. the bonus i/v is where tr is surprisingly very candid about his childhood days. Lotsa fun. I remember laying on my back listing to my dads stereo on cd 101 when it happened-and being where i was from i had to lay a certain way to enhance reception. Another classic. Note:smeary cuts everywhere-this is a mess, unbalanced, songs cut multiple times and smear back in....but....i said but.............this is the famous audie tape that was obviously set near trs cabinet-because he is up front and in your face gtr-wise the whole show..the vocs are audible but never prominent..same with keys..if you wanted to hear what todd was playing on this tour gtr wise-this is an old but as clear of a view as youll ever get..as to listen to hear the band, its atrocious..but it is very worthy place and although it shows some sloppy playing at times and the wear of the same show for months, it shows some truly remarkable playing and parts writing and clarifies in a musician's mind exactly what tr was playing and what sounds roger was making in this famed tour/set..this was a source of great enjoyment for many in the old cassette days and its great to see it again..thanks mr f SORRY I HAD THIS AS BOSTON..IT IS THE ATL |

OUTRO/CREDITS (JOV END VAMP WITH TR SOLOING AS THE CREDITS ROLL). 9/1/78 BBC INTERVIEW WITH BOB KILBEY. 9/9/78 TR WITH THE TUBES LIVE AT KNEBWORTH (WHO SONGS) Note:as any fan knows, this tour damn near yielded great fm broadcasts in every city they hit. this was the last show of the tour before todd went to europe with the tubes to generate excitement about the upcoming remote control recording sessions. this has to be one of the best of the tour. im still in the process of refurbishing old stuff but i was very happy to find this very low gen (1st gen). roger really eats it up on this one, great solos on abandon city, and seven rays. this also may be the only time time todd has ever referred to himself as the "runt" before you cried wolf. the bcn interview has todd talking about the 78 midnight special show which follows it. the only time todd and co ever hosted the show. the outro is funny as todd just keeps on going... the 9/1/78 is 2 days later when todd alone hit the UK and he talks about his plans there and the performance at knebworth rounds it out. |

The crazy 70s boot lp that most of us oldtimers have that is obviously the product of someone who doesn't know shit about todd. The titles are funny. The record has the encyclopedia of rock listing for todd and gang and the "another live" inside shot on front. It also says 3/29/49? This is not todds bday, so i dont know what thats about. Probably comes from the same place "philadelphia" or "funky detroit madness" did. Nevertheless, this is a classic and long overdue addition to the todd stash. Maybe someone can do a shrink up of the artwork of the album? More lp stuff to be transferred in the near future (as of 6/25/01) plan to be 2 fer (bricks/handsome young devils-hello people; and retrospective foresight by the nazz (all you cheap trick fans alert) among many others in both lp and cassette (archive project). ive now (6/02) gotten a different version of this that is probably the correct date (8/26/78) from wxrt in chicago-essentially the same product... |

Note:a nameless fan sent this to me- i tried to re-eq some (to good effect) to add to the archive project. The sound is clear but sounds to me as if it there was a large limiter somewhere in the process. It gets markedly (its not really ever that bad) better after death of r-n-r. This is an "in stride" performance from a band at their peak (in my opinion)-in other words, because of the gig schedule, i dont think the band ever again played as well as they did on this tour with this material, etc. here is a very good (but old) line recording that serves up a couple of ass whippin versions black and white and initiation just to show everyone how its supposed to be played and to remind everyone that utopia WAS THE best live performing band of that era-gig after gig-night after night. There will be more to come. |

BLACK MARIA Note:this is a bootleg cd- which means someone did the thing themselves, makes it look like official product and then sells it for cash with no money going to the artist..not a good thing to do to Todd/Utopia in my book..it sounds great like all the 78 bcasts do- missing probably a tune or 2 from the show..i wont pass on the artwork-evidently this is part of series of illegal shows for sale-they probably all sound good but i hope you all know i have absolutely nothing to do with it at all--you have to know how i feel about that by now. |

I did this 78 dc show because my friends were there, the bayou is gone and it was a great performance. The sound is good but not perfect due to a noisy line coming from the radio station but it is fm and is actually quite good for the lost part. From my small hometown of keyser wv we packed the place with close to 50 of the crew but not me... i remember hearing the show at home due to an important college assignment. i can hear my name called out when todd talks about the broadcast and can hear tr friends i know to this day. What a trip. Roger really has a terrific soloing night as he did often in these days-the dueling solos on abandon shows what this band was all about. The effort tr gives vocally was always there..not even on a bad night could you ever say todd wasnt trying in these days..the band always left it on the stage with effort. Kaz hits a peak on verb and initiation (playing wise). Gangrene is a mess as usual during what todd calls " a pointless ego trip to prove why we play what we do".. This switching of instruments would soon end. Another great thing about this is the post show where it is revealed all shows are sold out for days to come. The energy is high, as said above and the usual kick of initiation into cijty is higher than normal octane. Todd talks about the his Papal wishes weirdly in connection with a dream goes on.. and the crowd chants "thai stick" before Maria. The bonus tracks feature a good 78 i/v tr talks about personal stuff incl childhood...btw the JOV on the meat cd (which cant be 9/1/78-todd was gone to the UK) is not really JOV but a soloing instrumental that permutes into JOV chords while todd noodles away-it is good but i dont see why this type of appearance. anyway, you can get the whole meat cd under the 9/1/78(sic) heading. Classic. More 78s to come from the series. |
