|1973||M. FROG (JEAN-YVES LABAT)||LP TRANSFER BY SANDRA. FRANK BUBNICK||39:28|
Track List:WE ARE CRAZY. CHAMPEGARPAEN. TAKATYKITAKITE. SUCKLING-PIGS GAME. BROUSHNEIK. AMPHIBIAN CHAFF. WE ARE CRAZY (INSTRUMENTAL). HEY LITTLE LADY. MONKEY PEOPLE. WELCOME HOME. RELAX GOLIATH
Note:This was transferred by Sandra Winters from vinyl. Wonderful.. no surface noise..just like or even better than the original LP. Todd and crew appear. A wacky LP, but indicative of the scene bubbling around the edges of TR Utopia's sound. People say he didn't do anything, but this album sounds like an offshoot of that band. Very experimental at the time. Must have for completists. Way ahead of it's time for 1973~ Warren
Rolling Stone Issue #151 Review- M. Frog is the initial offering from a would-be French monk turned musician named Jean Yves Labat. Admittedly, France has never stood out as a major force in the rock music world, and M. Frog will do little to change this, but the album at least merits attention as a curiosity in a field rarely lacking such things. It is basically a synthesizer album, but Labat notates his musical scores not by note, but by an arrangement of multicolored squares placed side by side on a linear graph. Six full pages of this brilliant technologia are offered as inducement to sale, and they're quite neat to gawk at while listening to something else. The music itself runs the familiar gamut from synthijazz to the usual electronic mysterioso- cosmic space stuff - all of it competent but hardly innovative. If you're an electronic music freak, however, you might enjoy it, and it'll probably be in the delete sections of your record store within the year. Worth anything up to two bucks.

Track List:SET ONE: INTERNATIONAL FEEL/NEVER NEVER LAND. LONG FLOWING ROBE. IT WOULDN'T HAVE MADE ANY DIFFERENCE. I SAW THE LIGHT. YOU DON'T HAVE TO CAMP AROUND. A DREAM GOES ON FOREVER .LORD CHANCELLOR'S NIGHTMARE SONG. HELLO IT'S ME. PISS AARON. WAILING WALL (MUCH OF IT SPLICED FROM 1973-11-14 MASSEY HALL). HEAVY METAL KIDS/LE FEEL INTERNACIONALE. SET TWO: UTOPIA. DON'T YOU EVER LEARN/THE IKON (SEGMENT 1). BLACK MARIA. INTROS/WHEN THE SHIT HITS THE FAN -SUNSET BLVD/CONQUERING THE WEST. #1 LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR/ IS IT MY NAME/INSTRUMENTAL .HUNGRY FOR LOVE/THE IKON (SEGMENT 2 -W/BASS & DRUM SOLOS). JUST ONE VICTORY. DANCING IN THE STREET (A RARE SURPRISE ENCORE FOR DETROIT).
Note:I always wanted to do this (for decades)....
All the Todd rarities Collectors Circles know the story behind this one. An age old audience recording by Jared (RIP) of JEMS. He's responsible for pretty much all the 1970s Todd audience recordings we have from the Detroit a/o Michigan area. And this also was the first Todd Rarity to make the Bootleg Market. The '70s Boot Vinyl was named 'A Wizard, A Utopia Star' and the '90s Boot CD was named 'Born To Utopia' . neither 'boots' were none to good in sound quality.
However, thanks to JEMS for giving me their entire Todd Rarities Collection, I now have all of Jared's MASTER TAPES You have to keep in mind that audience recordings back in those days were pretty rudimentary, and so I decided to do some 'area beautification' to the MASTER recording (which has been done before of course). Being mostly a Mono recording I did some Stereo Separation first (Which accounts for on some tracks the left & right channels may be different in amplification). Being 45 year old tapes, I did some speed/temp correction...Then I tried to bring highlights up front. Especially vocals. But on the second set; from '#1 Lowest Common Denominator thru 'Hungry for Love'- Todd's vocal microphone mix seemed to be way turned down for some reason by the sound crew. Thus those tracks suffer a bit.
Don't get me wrong it's still all a little rough, but very much of an upgrade I think. You'll notice that I seamed all 'Medleys' together. And very worthy of burning to CD and enjoying the Show on your home system or car! I believe you'll definitely enjoy this upgrade and add it to your collection! Like I mentioned, I've always wanted to do this, and finally, I now Love This Show! ~ Warren The Band:
Todd Rundgren - Vocals, guitar, piano & tapes
Ralph Shuckett - keyboards
Jean-Yves "M Frog" Labat - synthesizer
Moogy Klingman - keyboards
John Siegler - bass
Kevin Elliman - drums

Track List:MATRIX 16.U-BOAT.LITTLE DRUMMER BOY.ORBIT.SUBTRONICK.LE VOYEUR.CASH.THE FLIGHT OF KROMAK 3.MATRIX.
Note:Very obsure Album, which extends the synthesized sound of Jean Yves Labat’s (M. Frog) 1973 ‘M. Frog’. It was recorded at Utopia Sound in Woodstock. Did Todd have any participation in it? We don’t know. Though it is full of mellow synthesized sounds a/o music, this a uncomfortable Album for me to sit and listen straight through the 33 Minutes. However, it is very interesting to sample it from time to time. It’s so eclectic and sounds like an experiment. Very thankful to Chis Razz for his copy though!~ Warren

Track List:U-BOAT.LE VOYEUR.THE FLIGHT OF KROMAK 3.SUBTRONICK.CASH.USA.MATRIX 16.TRANSITION #1.
Note:Another very obscure album from France, courtesy of Chris ‘Razz’. An extension of Jean Yves Labat’s (Formerly know as M. Frog) 1976 Album ‘Underwater Electronic Music’. Only ’U.S.A.’ and ‘Transition #1’ do not appear on fore-mentioned Album. Basically just two new tracks. A gamut from synthijazz to the usual electronic mysterioso- cosmic space stuff - all of it competent but way too innovative. If you're an electronic music freak, however, you might enjoy it~ Warren

Note:This appears in an entry here solely for listing purposes. This unreleased Album only appears on the 2001 OFFICIAL CRCL-7707/08 Nippon Crown (Japan) Todd Archive Series Vol 4 ‘Demos & Lost Albums’. For Todd is all over it. 8 of the Tracks written by Todd & performed by Utopia & Labat. In the Liner notes, Todd says, “I don’t remember much about it. I encouraged Jean Yves Labat to take advantage of the punk rock craze, and let him use my studio to work out his concept. I also talked him into wearing a frog costume, strapping a synthesizer & batteries to his back, and going out on the streets to perform, which he did about twice.” And here appears the group performance of Fan favorite - The Mysterians' ’96 Tears’ for the first & only time. Unlike any Album that Labat does, this one is rock & Roll. “Demos & Lost Albums,’ of course, is filled of Collectors Items. And I believe Todd released it just for the Fan. That is an entry for another day. Thank you Todd!~ Warren

Note:Warren's notes: Very good audience recording that I dubbed from age old Cassette... and left 'as is'...just split the tracks. We're missing much here due to silent gaps on the tape (probably due to the fact that the taper only had one tape and these shows definitely needed two). So many songs are partial. And we're missing 'A Dream Goes On Forever' (after The Verb "To Love") & 'Couldn't I Just Tell You' (after Initiation). But this Tape I finally found, in the Archives here, is magnificent quality & ESSENTIAL~ Warren
Gil's note: I just restored this to its proper speed and re-tracked it, otherwise it's unchanged in its original glory. GIA- AND THANK YOU GIL! EXCELLENT & ESSENTIAL!

BONUS:(CUTS IN) JUST ONE VICTORY - ACTUALLY FROM 1978-08-19 LATE SHOW.
Note:This is a special one. One of the audience recordings that we thought was lost and gone from our (My & Tony's) vaults forever. But recently, my Atlanta buddy Allen Law provided me again with this brilliant recording, by Karl Speck, of another show from Todd's 'stand' at the Agora Ballroom Atlanta (August 18 & 19 1978). I was at all these dates (early & late shows) and this was an incredible 'Back To The Bars' series. All Todd Rundgren events in Atlanta were sold out in the seventies (and still are to date), so the performances were always almost note perfect and tight...As you'll hear from all these tunes. Unfortunately, 'Can We Still Be Friends' has a tape skip about 2:52 in. I remember Todd's new girlfriend Karen Darvin doing a Ballerina accompaniment. It was a strange surprise...because you figure that 'Hermit' had just come out (April), and we hadn't seen the Midnight Special video of this one yet. Todd kids us about the applause Karen gets, by referring to the wooden slab that she danced on for her number. ‘You Cried Wolf' was new to us too with Todd on Drums. When I heard about 'Back To The Bars' to be released in December I had hoped some of these shows would make an appearance on the double lp. For I think they were much worthy. All performances are good here. It's hard to pick out any one tune in particular to focus on. ESSENTIAL ~ Warren

BANTER-BLACK MARIA. COULDN'T I JUST TELL YOU.HELLO IT'S ME.
Note:This is super rare one that was lost in our vaults until now. I can't believe I found this within the hundreds of tapes here! I don't think anybody (traders) even knew it was 'out there. It is the LAST Show of 1978 (Dec 31st at Uptown Chicago postponed due to a blizzard)! This age old cassette needed all kinds of channel corrections... that I think were on the Fan's 'recording equipment side'(how can somebody screw up a FM recording?). It's 'unscrewed' now! We're missing 'Real Man'... and 'It Wouldn't have Made Any Difference' jumps right in, and is alittle on the rough side. I did some speed correction to it all and just wee bit of re-mastering this thing. I didn't want to do too much, as to preserve the integrity of the recording (I left the 'Station ID' in). There's a slight hum that I could not get out of Side A. Hardly noticeable. I think it's from the Radio Station's Equipment. Having said all that; this FM now sounds pretty damn good! Seems we're missing 'Just One Victory' too, but I love all tunes that were captured. And I love Todd's humorous 'banter' here. I'm very very happy with how this Show turned out and I think that it is ESSENTIAL!~ Warren

Also unique in the fact that a couple of these performances are extended (‘Love In Action’ 6:50, ‘Rock Love’ 11:01 and ‘Love of The Common Man’ 5:50), but ‘The Ikon’ is short only 4:01. A "Channel Surfing" November Show…being the 1st half solo and then joined by Jesse and Ferenzik for the Bossa Nova type stuff. Kind of an ‘Unplugged’. Lots of lyrical and cue mistakes throughout. Todd doesn’t seem very serious about this performance either. He’s not the perfectionist we all know and love here. It seems he wants to respond to each ‘heckler’…talk rather than keep it to the performance. Whatever, the sound quality is superb~ Warren
