"Fidelity" by Todd Rundgren From "Nearly Human" (1989) Transcribed by Sean M. Hall Notes: E11 = Bm7/E, N.C. = no chord The Bm7 in the "True love does not" part of the song is for the sake of simplicity. What actually seems to be happening in the harmony, to my ear anyway, is that the Bm7 chord is voiced B-A-D-F# and on the word "love" the top two notes move up stepwise to give the voicing B-A-E-G, which I suppose if you had to give it a name could be called EMinadd9 (with a B in the bass of course). INTRO: Am9 - E11 (N.C.) Am9 I've been hurt E11 Am9 I've never been so hurt D9 Gmaj9 (N.C.) Yes, and only you know why Am9 E11 Am9 D9 Bm7 But I would be far more hurt if we had to say good bye Am7 Bm7 Cmaj7 Bm7 Am7 D When I think that it's all or nothing Bm7 Em7 I tell myself Am7 Bm7 Cma7 D/C Cmaj7 D/C Em7 True love does not de- mand fi- delity D7 C* Am7 D9 Gmaj9 If there's one sacred place always in your heart for me Am9 - E11 Am9 Time has come E11 Am9 I knew the time would come D9 Gmaj9 (N.C.) When someone would want to be more than friends Am9 E11 Am9 But we had a love so sweet D9 Bm7 I thought the dream would never end Am7 Bm7 Cmaj7 Bm7 Am7 D When I think that it's all or nothing Bm7 Em I tell myself Am7 Bm7 Cma7 D/C Cmaj7 D/C Em7 True love does not de- mand fi- delity D7 C* Am7 D7 Gmaj9 If there's one sacred place always in your heart for me Am7 Bm7 Cmaj7 D/C Cmaj7 D/C Em7 If my love could not with- stand this jealousy D7 C* Am7 D9 Gmaj9 Bm7 I'd remember the day I threw away our eterni- ty Em7 Bm7 Em7 Has no plan, things will happen we don't understand D/C Cmaj7 One day the glove is on the other hand Am7 Bm7 Cmaj7 Bm7 Am7 D And when I think that it's all or nothing Bm7 Em I tell myself Am7 Bm7 Cma7 D/C Cmaj7 D/C Em7 True love does not de- mand fi- delity D7 C* Am7 D7 Gmaj9 If there's one sacred place always in your heart for me Am7 Bm7 Cmaj7 D/C Cmaj7 D/C Em7 If my love could not with- stand this jealousy D7 C* Am7 D9 Gmaj9 I'd remember the day I threw away our eternity *The C chord here has a suspended 4th (F#) from the previous chord (D7) that resolves down to the 'E'. Similar harmony, coming from the Lydian mode, can be found in many of Todd's songs and an almost identical effect (in a different key) can be heard in the refrain of "Love of the Common Man".
