"Who's that Man?" Todd Rundgren From the album "Runt" (1970) Transcribed by Brian Canfield Intro: A Chorus: A Who's that man, who's that man Who told him that he could hold your hand D A When I looked him in the eye he ran G D A Who's that man, who's that man? Verse: (there's some riffs for this section that I've tried to lay out below) A Maryanne, who's that man? There's one thing that you should understand D You know many things that go unsaid B E By the way one earns his daily bread. A He's a lotus-eater, a plow-share beater, A rack-jobber and an old grave robber, A strip miner, a big headliner, A charge-card diner and he comes from Carolina. (Repeat Chorus/Verse/Chorus) Guitar Solo is mostly over an A chord, but there's the G-D-A progression from the chorus at the end of it. I suck at playing lead, so I'm not gonna try to transcribe it. But I can at least tell you that Todd is playing primarily in the A-minor pentatonic scale, starting around the 12th Fret. The verse and chorus then repeat again, and the song modulates up a whole step towards the very end. Here's some approximations of the riffs used in various parts of the song: Intro Lead: This is a brief little lead part played before the vocals come in. E---0----5----0----5----0----5--------5---7---8p7p5--------------- B--------------------------------5s7------------------------------ G----------------------------------------------------------------- D----------------------------------------------------------------- A----------------------------------------------------------------- E----------------------------------------------------------------- ^Something like that.. Verse Riffs: E---------------------------------------------------------------- B---------------------------------------------------------------- G---------------------------------------------------------------- D---------7------5----7----5---5---4---4-------------------------- A------------7---------------------------------------------------- E-----5----------------------------------------------------------- A ("Maryanne..") (x2) E----------------------------------------------------------------- B----------------------------------------------------------------- G----------7--------5----7-----5----5-----4----4------------------ D--------------7-------------------------------------------------- A------5---------------------------------------------------------- E----------------------------------------------------------------- D ("You know many things..") E----------------------------------------------------------------- B----------------------------------------------------------------- G----------------------------------------------------------------- D----------------------------------------------------------------- A-------------5--6--7--------------------------------------------- E-----7---7------------------------------------------------------- B E ("By the way..") E----------------------------------------------------------------- B----------------------------------------------------------------- G----------------------------------------------------------------- D-------------------4----7------------------------------------------ A---------4----7---------------------------------------------------- E-----5------------------------------------------------------------ A ("He's a lotus eater..") etc. Most of these riffs are educated guesses on my part. The drums and stuff are so loud, it's tough to hear everything in the mix. But really, does anyone like this song that much anyway? dontpoll@aol.com
