About a year after Dorren and I recorded the cover of “Verb to Love” submitted below my friend John Franchese who was a very powerful rock singer, guitarist, and song writer and I where in the processing of recording some his original songs in my home studio. John and I had been in a band (Steelhouse) about three years before. By this time I had traded my Korg keyboard in for a Roland Jupiter 6 polyphonic analog synth and co-purchased a Drumulator drum machine as they where now affordable. John heard and loved the vocal work Dorren did on Verb to Love and invited her to join him on the vocals for this song. John, Dorren, and I wanted to share this song because you can hear the very strong Todd influence in the big sounding arrangement and strong vocals. We hope you will enjoy it as much as we did recording it.

This is a cover of the song "The Verb to Love" that I recorded in my home studio room in my apartment around 1982. At this point my equipment was a little better and I now had a Teac four track and a polyphonic Korg keyboard and used something back then called "Drum Drops" which where LPs of drum feels I edited by splicing tape to make the arrangement. This is before drum machines became very cheap. My friend Dorren Brennan did a great job on the vocals and I helped with a vocoder. Our challenge was to get as close to the original to see if we could do it.

BOSTON MUSICIANS TO PERFORM A NIGHT OF MUSIC BY PROLIFIC SINGER-SONGWRITER & MULTI-INSTRUMENTALIST TODD RUNDGREN

FRIDAY, MAY 7TH – REGENT THEATRE, ARLINGTON, MA

On Friday, May 7th at 8pm, “Road to Utopia—A Tribute to Todd Rundgren” will take place at the Regent Theatre, 7 Medford Street, in Arlington, Massachusetts. A stellar nine-piece band, led by Gary Backstrom of Jiggle the Handle, will present an unprecedented evening of music written and recorded by Todd Rundgren—whose career spans more than 40 years.

In celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Todd Rundgren’s first solo album, “Runt,” released in 1970, Backstrom has pulled together some of his favorite Boston area musicians for the occasion. The resulting group—featuring members of The Gordon Stone Band, Jiggle the Handle, Gary Backstrom Band, Another Planet, Uncle Sammy, The Grass Gypsies, Humble Bee, and All the Animals—will be performing music from many of Rundgren’s albums from throughout the last four decades. As to why Todd Rundgren, Backstrom says; “I have found that I have outgrown some past influences such as The Dead and Allman Brothers and feel the need to challenge myself with something totally different. His [Rundgren’s] music touches me on a very deep, unspoken level and I have found a new world of musical inspiration in all different phases of his music.” In addition to Rundgren’s many instrumental albums to choose from, Gary will be performing a song off his album, “A Cappella”, in which every sound on the album is a product of Rundgren’s voice. For this performance Backstrom is bringing in the Family Folk Chorale.

The band includes:
Gary Backstrom

Chris Nemitz
- Keys and vox
Dave Brunyak
– Guitar
Brian O’Connell
