The Liars were two sets lasting 2 1/2 hours with no breaks in between. The band came on stage in some very strange costumes for both sets. In the first set, Prairie Prince drummed dressed as some kind of maniacal bishop, Kasim Sultan played sublime bass dressed as priest and the guitarist (Jesse Gresse, not Todd but looked like he might be "Son of Todd!) was wearing this strange Fu Man Chu costume and his moustache kept falling off. Todd himself looked like a space pilot from the future! At the end of the first set, Todd continued with a couple of solo tracks and then the band returned dressed like 19th century farm owners to do a 10 minute set (Green Onions) without Todd so that he could changed into his "Soul Brother" suit.
I've not been a big fan of Todd's music only having 4 or 5 albums out of a huge backlist. I was pleased then that the set consisted mostly of tracks from the Liars CD, one of the few I actually possess.
My only gripe of the evening was that Todd didn't play guitar enough. Don't get me wrong, Jesse Gresse (the main guitarist) was good but he wasn't Todd. The highlights of the evening, with the exception of THE highlight, were all the songs were Todd picked up his strat to solo, in particular "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". The best track of the night however was "Liar", the final track on the new CD. If you haven't heard this, go out and buy it. So powerful - although it starts off with somewhat sinister middle Eastern motif, it builds up into an amazing hard rocking crescendo. (Ironically, having only recently bought the Liar CD, I hadn't played it all the way through and hadn't reached this (the last) track).
